Default 46RH with a 5.9

So I'm not too versed on any transmission really. The 5.9 is externally balanced. Is the weight on the flexplate, or is it on the torque converter? Dropped a 5.9 into a 94 2wd. It was originally a 5.2. I will be purchasing a 2800 non lock-up (I believe that's what the 94 46RH uses) converter soon, and I just want to make sure I buy what I need. I will also probably buy a new flex plate, because, why not. It has 270xxx miles, and since I'm in there might as well. Also will be ordering a TransGo HD kit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can use a neutral balance torque converter and then use the flexplate from a 97 and up. The early 5.9 magnums had the weights on the torque converter, so this is a work around.

wait on that converter!! MOST 46RH trannys used the lockup, just the real early ones in the heavier trucks (3/4-1 ton) and early diesels that didn't use lock up. there is an easy way to tell if yours has it or not. with trans out of truck and converter off, look at the splines. if they go ALL THE WAY to the end of the input shaft it is non lockup. If the splines stop like an inch shy of the end of the shaft and the splines are cut down/"shaved off" that last inch of the input then it HAS lockup. You CAN"T use a non lockup converter on a lockup trans or vise versa.

whether weight is on converter or flex depends on year. from around 96 up it is on flexplate, about time OBD 2 computer system came out. older and it was on converter.
also on the older ones one hole that holds flex to converter is slightly offset, only line up correctly one way. this so the balance weight on converter winds up in right spot in relation to engine crank.... bolt pattern on ALL of them is that way bolting flexplate to crank. new or old.
once they started putting weight on flexplate they made the bolt pattern the same between the flexplate and converter, NONE of these converters had the weight on them, so same one can be run behind a 3.9 a 318 or a 360.... IF you have the right flexplate.
On these youll see a stamp that says "90*" on the front of the converter somewhere.

That's for the info! I'm holding off buying anything until I have the trans dropped. It's not a daily, so no worries there.
