Toby,

Looking at the fuse diagram there are 2 5-Amp fuses under the hood, so I will check them both.

I got out a bit ago and checked the fuses under the dash, the stereo is a 10-Amp in position 12, it seemed fine. I replaced it with a spare and no change, but I don't like the look of the spare, so I have picked up some new ones, when I go out in a bit. When I was waiting for my lunch at Sonic, I pulled the dash apart, everything seemed okay, with one exception, the black wire, ground I assume, went to a grey woven strap, while there was a screw this was loose, I tried screwing it in to the dash and still the stereo did not work.

My new stereo arrived today, you have to love Prime, was supposed to be here tomorrow. I am almost wondering if I should run over to the local stereo place and see if they have a test set up and can tell me if it is the stereo or something with the truck. I will keep you all informed on what I find and will post some pictures.

Well buying a new wiring harness did not help. Seems I got a defective one. So off to find another one.

OLD STEREO IS WORKING.
I stopped at a local stereo shop while I was out, mainly to see if they had a quick fix to get the CD out, it was one that a friend is the artist and I did not want to tell him I lost it. The tech there said that some times totally taking it out then replugging it in and hooking up the ground will make it come back on. Well since the stereo was in my hand, when I got out to the truck, I plugged in it, screwed down the ground turned the key and the lights came on, no radio as I forgot to hook the antenna up.

Well seems that the front (L & R) - is on the power plug on all the wiring harness sets. So did not purchase a new one. Found that out when I went to O'Riellys and was looking at it before buying the counter guy scratched his head too, it was the other one that noticed it. So back to connecting then soldering the wires, I have the new stereo in the mount already.

The + side yes; the - side for both front speakers are on the OTHER connector.

Here's a wiring diagram for a factory radio (and by extension, the factory wiring harness):

Ralph,

Thank you for that. I have saved it to my files and printed it off. I was able to get the stereo in and working. For $37 including harness and install kit it is not bad, great sound. Only thing I don't like is that I have to hit the button each time to see the clock, I have found no way to have it display continually and when the stereo is off, it is off, not even the clock.

That sounds like my $18 Chinese special (which came from The Netherlands when shipped ... I just don't understand globalization, I guess.)

Which made me facepalm at myself when I read how you fixed it; I've done that twice now on my Dakota (pulled the memory fuse) after the first time it locked up on me.

I should have thought of that to suggest it.

Oh, well.

Glad it all worked out.
