Hey guys

Hoping someone can help.

1992 Dakota 4x4.....the steering wheel felt loose the other day....looking at the joint on the steering shaft under the hood, I found that the rubber insert to to "rag joint" has backed out and when you turn the wheel, the roll pin moves in the big hole shown.....

Is this a "replace the whole shaft " thing like in the 98s and up or can this joint be rebuilt like the 80s and below Mopars?

I cant seem to find parts for either scenario?????

Is your column a tilt column or not?

If a tilt column, my plans for the new intermediate shaft I did for my 1988 will work just fine; plus, by lengthening it, you can use it with a body lift. Linky here: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...ate-shaft.html

If a non-tilt, the top U-joint is a pain, but otherwise, you can adapt what I did.

Or if you're lucky, find a good one in the boneyard ...

Yep - its a tilt....

Thanks for the info, will check out the link....

How tough is getting to the upper one on the 4x4/tilt? Somewhere in all my searching I read that the master cylinder has to come out?????

Don't know about on the 4x4 ... but if it's tilt, I'd bet you can reach it just fine. You'll need to eyeball yourself.

(The 1990 4x4 non-tilt is easy enough to get my hand on the U-joints there ... but due to the different column design, it's still a right bitch to disassemble. The TILT would be about as easy as anything.)

Biggest secret I can pass on is to make sure the front suspension is centered, and to keep the steering wheel centered, as you go through putting the new parts on.

Also, a 12" long piece of double-D should work just fine.
