Fuel Tank
Due to the non-availability of a 87-90 fuel sending unit and/or a complete top hat assembly, I've been checking into swapping in a newer tank.
I'm hoping someone else can point out things I haven't considered yet.
But.
What I've found out is that a) the same top hat assembly is offered for 1991 to 1995 (94/95 for I4 only).
b) Filler neck assembly is different from my 1988.
c) The grommet in the fuel tank is the same 87-97.
d) As noted elsewhere the rollover valve is not available itself, but there may be an acceptable Dorman replacement. Won't hurt to get the tank with the fuel pump assembly, though, even if you're replacing the top hat with a new one.
e) This would be a good time for others to upgrade to a 22 gallon tank.
f) Almost all U-Pull-Its will drill or punch a hole in the tank to drain it; you basically have to find an old style They-pull-it yard to get it from.
g) I'll lose the tank drain, alas. Not that THAT kills me; it's another possible leak point with age. (My 1988 has a second run down to the bottom, no filter, where there's a fitting on the frame you can uncover and hook a pump to in order to empty the tank. This was dropped by 1991 ... )
h) HOPEFULLY the sending units are still available later; I may add a sending unit to put on my garage shelf to keep the truck running right.
i) The tank straps are the same for a 22 gallon 1987-2004; but I'd probably put new ones in with the tank, even if I lift the bed (which is the way I'd do it anyway; time to re-run brake and other lines and run some additional electrical wiring to feed the bed with while the bed is off. Additional for things like adding a trailer brake, power to the bed, possibly CHMSL on the topper, beefed up backup lights, topper light inside, bed lights, etc. Add wiring of sufficient gauge and enough colors, you can do what you want to on a dreary winter day in the garage instead of having to fight it later.)
Anyone think of any other "surprises" I'd be having to watch out for? This is NOT a "Do it this month" thing, but a "Deep plans while redoing schtuff" thing. Also to fix my gas gauge which has become possessed by an evil demon.

There is a post in the FAQ about the rollover valve replacement fix. I did it to the Airtex pump I have in reserve. I think I posted on that page too. I got the valve off the shelf at napa or autozone.
I looked and could not see it in the FAQ so I searched it https://dodgeforum.com/forum/dodge-s...g-no-fuel.html

The sending unit seems to be out of stock already, almost everywhere.
