Lightbulb new project questions,.

i bought a 91 dodge dakota 5.2 2WD a few months ago to be a project, i have worked on trucks before but definitely new to dodge.
got it for dirt cheap i count pass the offer since it is very clean on the inside.

the seller said that it had a bad transmission so he removed it to send it off to be rebuilt. but he never went to get it,
from what i can tell the cooling lines were cut off. and probably the seller was not honest since i saw transmission valve parts on the bed.

i am about to start putting money into this project but first i have to check the engine to make sure its good. but i have to buy a new starter since he didnt have the old one.
after that i will need new cooling lines and a transmission,

my question is. what kind of transmission is it?
any other dodge models or years compatible?

Should be a 46RH / A518.

A 46RH from 1988 to 1995 will fit, as long as it's Dodge and not Jeep.

(The 92-95 will have an additional notch for the Magnum crank position sensor in the bell housing; I'd just put some really good tape over it to keep crap from falling into the bell housing and drive it, if that's what you find.)

Do note that they didn't add the lockup torque converter on the 46RH or A518 (two names, same transmission) until about 1991; an older one won't have the lockup torque converter, but WILL have overdrive.

I'd check car-part.com for a core unit and rebuild it before putting it in.

If you ARE rebuilding, a 42RH/44RH same years will also fit; but they're not rated for the full power with factory parts. (This isn't as much a problem with the aftermarket). 1st Gear is stiffer in the 42/44 than in the 46; that's a consideration.
