Default Dodge Dakota headers

So I put shorty headers off a 92 Dakota onto my 90 and was able to get them to fit and just ran about 8 inches of 2” pipe to a turndown tip for now on both sides until I get the y pipe welded back up so I can finish the exhaust but now the truck shoots flame out the tips after high rev and backfires quite a bit, so I was wondering will I be able to keep the headers on or do I need to go back to stock and what would cause the flames.

The flames are because it's running rich, quite possibly because you either didn't connect the O2 sensor, or because the exhaust is too short to keep air from hitting the O2 causing an erroneous "lean" condition.

What exactly were you trying to do? Besides maul the poor truck?

it started out as just replacing the stock manifold with headers. I’m gonna weld the y pipe and rest of the exhaust up still. I was wanting to know if it is okay to use the 92 headers

Well, you still don't have the heat riser/EGR passageway.

Up to you, though.
