Default Reman Auto Trans Curiosity

I'm curious as to exactly what a remanufactured or rebuilt automatic transmission is. Is it simply a process of tearing apart a tranny and replacing only those parts that are worn beyond spec or do they replace certain parts regardless of being in spec or not? What parts are considered? Gears, clutch plates, bands, etc... Just want to log this info for possible future consideration. Thanks.

Clutches/steels, seals, o-rings, bands, and such are automatically replaced. Beyond that, hard parts are only replaced when they are damaged. Different folks define 'damaged' differently, and some are a lot more accepting than others. Some have good warranties, and stand behind them, but, only if you have the trans installed by a 'professional'.... (read that: Shop.....) Most of what you are paying for on a rebuild is labor. If you want to save that money, and do it yourself, it is eminently doable. Several folks on here have done their own, and had never been in an auto trans before. Doing it yourself, YOU get to pick what parts go into it, and any upgrades you want to do. Keep in mind, most parts from the 47/48R? transmissions will go right into a 46R? case...... so you can build your trans as bulletproof as you like. Of course, that gets expensive quick.

What HeyYou said.

One thing that's good to do is to watch the TransmissionBench videos on the 46RE rebuild; the steps are the same for almost any of the 4xRy transmissions, but exact parts will vary.

ATSG also sells good manuals, but they're designed for usage in a school, so they are ... well, I won't say they tend to dry, but the Sahara is a bloody ocean in comparision!

But watch the videos and see if you really want to tear into it.

Well, I hope it never comes down to having to replace or rebuild my tranny. I'm getting too old to be contorting under my truck. Wrecks my bod. But it is something I need to think about so I appreciate y'alls input. Maybe I'll look up some rebuild videos. Watched parts of them. Doesn't look out of reach for me from what little I have seen but I think I might dread the removal/reinstall part crawling under the truck. That sucker has to be pretty heavy. I guess maybe I understand Ralph's demented hobby of collecting and reading car manuals. I kind of like watching videos of repairs. Maybe there's something wrong with us.

So all them gears in there are not normally replaced? I suspect if those are all chewed up it's not worth rebuilding?? And if one is chewed up they're probably all chewed up?? Just a guess though.

Trick is to clean each part as you take it out, and inspect. If its bad, add it to the list. If too many of them are bad, might be cheaper to score another trans from the junkyard, and rebuild it. Or, use it as a parts donor.
