Default A/C

My a/c had been working and recently stopped. I知 going to assume it needs charged because it still blows hard, but is not cold.

What are my options? What should I inspect or make sure is working? I知 aware that R12 is longer allowed.

Hello
You can still find R12 but it's hit or miss. I usually find it at auto swap meets as I don't know if it's sold retail in anything but large canisters for professional use. I found a couple cans last year for $15 each, thought that was a pretty good bargain as I've seen it for a lot more than that in the past, sometimes $30 for a pound can. I have no vehicles that use it anymore, sold the last one two days ago so I don't have to have anything but 134A now...at least until they outlaw that stuff.

If your system is completely discharged you probably ought to replace all the o-rings and see if that will resolve your leaks. I had a shop do an expensive R12 charge on my old RX7 convert years ago, cost $150 to do and then come to find out the dryer had the pressure hole blown out, charge lasted all of 15 min. They should have checked it before doing that...

Due to the age, I'd plan on replacing condensor, evaporator, heater core, blower motor, compressor, receiver/dryer, and all hoses I could; then install a proper charge of R134a after pulling a proper vacuum.

But that's because, once it springs a leak at this age, you'll be chasing leaks every year unless you do the whole thing.
