got bitten by the splice
this on my 96 4wd. Ive had these last 4 days off of work, went out earlier to get gas for work tomorrow, and a stop at Lowe's for a few bathroom remodel supplies. Ran fine. stared immediately like always.
a few hours later decided Wendy's Chili sounded good, Wendy's is only a couple miles away. I pulled up in drive thru, inched up as a couple cars ahead of me did, about the 3rd or 4th time it just laid over and died.... W T F??? This truck has been running so good, never has let me down even with 229k on it. I pushed it into a parking stall (all were empty because the inside dining is closed like everywhere else....)
I called my wife, she came and got me and our dinner,
In the meantime I realized I had my scanner in the truck..... "no communication".... would not read. Huh? this is 1st time since getting this scanner I have tried it on this truck..... Check engine light was on with key on/engine not running, but I couldnt do the key dance. Couldnt hear the pump either (wonderful/// I had run a total of 10 miles off a full tank between the 2 times I left the house with it today)
so for teh He11 of it I opened the hood and started unwrapping wiring harness and yup.... as the 1 red/white split into 3, the middle one of the bundle on the "3 wire side" had a big blown open powdery blue spot....
came home, ate, gathered some tools, went back and fixed it in about 40 minutes.... couldn't solder in the back parking lot of Wendy's, but crimped the snot out of it and put heat shrink over the connections..... started up and drove home.
My wife called my son (he has a 3/4 ton Ram V10, 4wd with a car hauler trailer) he lives about 16 miles further out from the Wendy's than where we are.... he's down, hasn't left the couch all day (very much UNlike him, he runs circles around me// so I knew something was up especially with what he told me yesterday, that he was gonna be doing today) so it was either fix it there or (something I havent had to do in over 15 years) call the Hook...... I'm glad I was able to fix it there.
I have my 99 apart right now, that truck has not been as dependable as the 96, even with 100K less miles on it.... heater core is out, dash is apart.... I have been window shopping at newer trucks, there's finally one close to what Id like to have at a lot in town.... full size, 8' bed reg cab DODGE.... been looking for a while, I'm in a "white rut" right now... my 2 Dakotas and 01 Durango are all white, I want away from it but not willing to go 4 door to get away from it. but every single Dodge I see come up for sale that is reg cab 8' bed is white also..... I cant win.

Suggestion - I use a battery operated or a butane operated soldering iron when I'm in the car, so I don't have to futz with the power cord for my iron or gun, unless I NEED that 550W gun!
Here's a Hakko at Amazon: Hakko FX-901/P Cordless Soldering Iron: Soldering Guns Irons: AmazonSmile: Industrial & Scientific
They also have a Milwaukee, although WOO WHEE that sumbeech 'spensive! AmazonSmile: M12 REDLINK Soldering Iron Kit W/LED Light: Home Improvement
Edit: My Irodo leaks so I don't use my butane anymore; I just ordered one (not an Irodo!) from Banggood for Christmas to me, though.
