Default Are rear end assemblies interchangeable?

My question is can I put a Chrysler 8.25 rear end from a 1992 4x2 Dakota in my 1992 4x4 Dakota assuming the axle ratios are the same. I can't find any used 4x4 rear end assemblies but can find 4x2's. I noticed also that the 4x2 rear axles are on top of the leaf springs and my 4x4 axle is under the leaf springs. Another question is what other Chrysler/Dodge vehicles would have an axle that would fit my Dakota

Did you check car-part.com or hollanderparts.com for a rear end?

Yes, you can, but it'll squat horribly unless you swap the spring perches over.

Directly fit? 1987-1996 Dakota; 1987-1990 will require drums and axles swapped.

DO remember that you MUST match the ratio of the old rear end also, unless you want to rip the transfer case right out of the truck.

What's wrong with your current rear end?
