Default 87 Dakota 2wd automatic: Help!

I guy's, I am new to the forum. Most the time I can find and fix minor problems, however I got something I did not expect. I had my truck for about 16 years and I lost 2nd gear. I changed out filter and new fluid. Well that lasted a few months. Now keep in mind I don't drive it much run to town a few times a month. Well it just gave out on me so it took me 2 days to pull the transmission out (Hey I am going on 64 don't laugh and over weight) So today I got it cleaned up 34 years for road grime and grease. Took it down looked it over and found more damage then I wanted to see. Well getting the kit is one thing but I have a bad front clutch retainer. So I need to find one but here is the real issue, everything I am finding says this model is the only year with this transmission. I have tried to search for a part number and or where I can find one? Can someone tell me if the 904 internal parts for the A998 or 31RH is the same in some other years, or models? ...... Can someone tell me can the internal parts from the 904 in slant 6 work or no. Thank you

The A998/A999 that you have, isn't just one year. My 1988 has one also; it was also available for 1989. And was used even later in the vans.

THAT said.

If you go to Chrysler A904 TF6 30RH A998 31RH A999 32RH Automatic Transmission Exploded view spare part (automatic-berger.de) and download the PDFs (free download), see what the call out is for the part you're looking for.

That PDF also has the Transtar part number.

You can also check the parts list from the FAQ here; do that, and find the Chrysler part number for the part you're looking for.

Page 542 gives the part number 3621476 for both the 225 slant six 904 and the 3.9 998 transmissions.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...oNw_nU3cl3V4QM gives us that it's Transtar part # 12555

That may help find the part.

(I had to do something similar two years ago, when I had to have the front pump replaced.)

Thank you RalphP,
After I posted I did find in my rebuild book the number on my tranny. Turns out my 87 was a late 87 build and has the 88 transmission. I am not clear on what is different as all these 904's look the same for the most part. I am Thankful you have all this info as it is going to be huge help to me. If all else I think I found a donor transmission. Just got to get the guy to send me the numbers so I can check for the model year for match. As I may have said I am old school going on 64. Back in my day you could pick up a 904 and bolt it in or the 727 if that was what you had. But I started digging out info for my 87 and all I found was those 3 years that would work 87,88, & 89. Then there is the issue where they mention about a kickdown or no kickdown. I will update more later as funds are low and retirement bites
Thank you again for this help.

I have had no results finding what or where I can buy the part I need, or finding a transmission. Numbers now jumbled in my head and can't think as how to find out what transmission I can use to interchange in my truck if that is even an option? Can someone give me a list of what model year and type transmission will replace what I have? These are the numbers on my transmission 4446363. my rebuild book tells me this number is a type A998 with some avbs. in notes HS, ELU, to 11-87. So please any new insight to help me Please

Car-part.com shows 4 pages of 87-89 Dakota, RAM, and van transmissions that will interchange.

You have a late 1987 A998; but the whole unit will interchange with early 1987's or even 88s or 89s.

I think you're trying to overthink it.

Take the factory service manual if you want to rebuild your current transmission along with a good A998/A999 manual (ATSG makes some decent ones, albeit those that figure you know what an automatic transmission is and what the common parts are).

Or swap the whole transmission.

But hit up car-part.com for possible donors for a junkyard swap.

Yes I am over thinking as far as over thought now I will check on the link you posted. I guess I am just bothered by the thought there is nothing close to me and what few parts I found on some sites ie ebay or local parts store keep telling me part is no long available or not found or don't fit mine. The rebuild book I have is from Car Tech SA394 for Chrysler Torque Flite A-904 & A-727. It helps me with good photos and details. The down side is no part numbers to search by. So I hope the link will have what I need. Thank you, Your help with chat really helps calm me down so I can think better too

The late Tim Russert told a story once. When he was a kid he was bothered by a bunch of stuff going on in his life. His dad noticed and asked young Tim what was wrong. Tim started listing off all the things that were wrong. His dad made him cut up little pieces of paper and write down each of his worries on those scraps of paper. Then he had young Tim throw all the pieces of paper in a shoe box. Dad took the box and put it on a shelf in Tim’s closet and told him not to touch it.

A couple weeks later, Dad went into Tim’s closet and pulled out the shoe box. He sat down with Tim on his bed and opened the box. One by one he went through each scrap of paper, each worry that Tim wrote down. And one by one little Timmy realized he was no longer worrying about any of the things he wrote down just two weeks ago.

You’ll get it figured out.

Thank you for the story. However good it sounds my worries just seem to get bigger. I see many give up and sell their project but no matter how long it takes I plan to see this one thru, Story time: See once when I was a young man I seen this New Dodge commercial on the TV and I told my then Fiancée One day I am going to buy one of them trucks. Well as a family man and not so well off new was out of the question. Some 18 year later I got my 87 Dakota by this time I became disabled and still no so much money my Wife previously my Fiancée was stating good job money was a bit better but I still had year to go to get this old truck back in shape along the road it left a few parts. some since been replaced but pain got thinner and no some rust with plans to paint it this fall/winter, Well you guessed it I lost the tranny. I got all the interior almost ready to go in need to get seat redone. Still looking for a speedometer cable. Complete front end rebuild less the Rack & Pinon, so if I live another few year by the time I am 65 I hope I have it all done and looking new. btw one more thing, the commercial I spook about. I have it downloaded on my PC for close to 20 years. I should say in my files of 20 years it's been on more PCs then I care to recall.

You STILL need the factory service manual for your car.

Also scarf up the 86/87 truck parts list from the link in the FAQ.

(I'd get the others also, for the rare item that's an assembly or not mentioned in one year that's broken down in another.)

For a parts catalog, there's always the Transtar pages - you can find a 904 family sheet at Chrysler A904 TF6 30RH A998 31RH A999 32RH Automatic Transmission Exploded view spare part (automatic-berger.de) which shows the core numbers (the catalog listing will give suffix numbers for revisions).

There's always Trans Star Industires - Transmission Catalog.pdf (billavista.com) .

EDIT: Don't forget Trans Parts Online 904 904 Transmission Parts .
