Default Axle swap compatibility question

I apologize if I’ve missed this info. Searched and read the gen I sticky but couldn’t pinpoint the info I need.

I have a 1991 Dakota reg cab long bed 2wd.
I have a noisy 7.25 rear end and I want to replace it before it blows up on me. Looking at junkyard 8.25s.

I know I need an axle from a 2wd model. I know a gen I axle will swap in but they are few and far between in my area. There are however a lot of gen2 and gen3 dakotas around. From what I’ve read the rear of the frames have stayed similar over the years. I saw that people can jam a Durango rear in there with not a lot of manipulation but I’m more inclined to bolt on swap for this situation.

So my question is wiill a gen2 axle from a 2wd work in my truck without relocating perches or shock mounts? Are the hub to hub widths the same?

If so, what about a gen3? Or am I limited to 1996 and back without grinding and welding. Moreover do I need to do anything with brake system if I do this to a newer trucks axle. I don’t care about ABS or anything just need it to stop when I push the peddle. Also my current wheels are 6 lug.

Thanks!
