Default runs bad after warm up

1993 dakota 4x4 5.2 auto 205k miles

cranks and runs like a new truck cold and as long as you don't kill the engine it continues to run PERFECTLY. idle is perfect. throttle response is perfect. gets avg 16 mpg. couldn't ask for a better running truck.

BUT .....if you crank up and drive to the store and kill it...it cranks fine then surges to 1100 rpm, then down to 400 rpm, then to 600 rpm where it normally idles. it will idle fine until you put it in any gear. then it drops to 150 rpm and if you touch the throttle it dies. if you dont touch the throttle it will come back to 600 rpm and if you wait 2-3 seconds it will take the throttle and run perfectly until you kill it again. it repeats this process exactly...every time you kill it when at operating temperature.

installed a new fuel pump and filter
new idle control unit
throttle position sensor
what passes for mass airflow unit
new air filter
total clean of throttle body
new plugs-wires-dist cap-etc
new thermostat-was running around 150. now runs around 190 or so
checked for vacuum leaks under the hood and under the dash. no leaks at all. spray ether till you can't breath. intake bolts are tight.
all injectors are working and connectors are good and tight. no vacuum leaks there either.

have not changed the only o2 sensor it has (upstream) why? can't even touch it without removing the crossover pipe. can barely even see it. cant see or even touch the connector. top of trans and my fingers will not fit there.

there is no converter on the truck and no downstream o2 sensor.

have not changed the water temp sensors.

have not changed cam pos sensor or crank pos sensor or the coil because i am tired of throwing $$$$ at this thing with zero results

have not cleaned the eg and all hoses are installed and not leaking

it has one code: 34 cruise control which does not work. everything else works perfectly on this truck.

i have read every post i can find in this forum and my problem seems to be pretty common with few actual cures.

i welcome suggestions from anyone with a similar problem that has actually FOUND and FIXED the problem

thanks a lot

As a test, you can unplug the front O2 sensor, and see if it runs any better once warm. If it does, replace the sensor. NTK or Denso only please.

update: put in new 02 sensor. made no difference. decided to do the new water temp sensor that feeds info to the pcm. that fixed it. runs like new truck in every condition. so....i have all these new parts on my truck. runs great. mileage is up from 11 to 16. time to pull the dents and paint it.
