Dodge Dakota (1990)
In the past almost 2 months i have installed 3 new starters and they all keep going bad, this last starter on truck sounds like its spinning but not clicking out and when i take starter off and test it it clicks out but no spin..why does it keep on doing this with all the starters.
Bad ground, or power feed. The little wire just engages the solenoid, which also kicks out the gear that engages the flywheel. If you get inadequate voltage to the solenoid, it won't trip all the way, so, no starter spin. If the starter runs though, and isn't engaging the flywheel, (just get the WHIRRRRRR) then something is sticking.
and the gear isn't coming out far enough. If you have had several starters do the exact same thing, I would look real hard at the connections at the starter, and the battery, make sure the starter has a clean surface to mount to, and buy a better quality starter.

New or rebuilt?
IDK about the 1990's past all 1st gens being similar. Bu I had this issue with a different rig. It was the Dodge badged (mitsubishi mighty max) Ram50 It turned out there was more than one kind of starter for them. I too had the problem with the bendix not throwing out far enough to catch the flywheel. So there is that. Not knowing anything I would call the dealer with the Vin number and see if they can get you a part number for that starter. It should work fine as long as no one changed the style of motor before you bought it.
