I suspect the oil-cooled ignition coil is failing on my 89 Shelby and want to upgrade it to a more efficient E-Core. Luckily I was at Walmart when it decided not to start again, the coil was extremely hot so I used frozen peas and it got me out of there. I did this upgrade on my 88 with the V6 about 15 years ago and ran it for a decade with no issues after that. Coincidentally it happened both on my 88 and 89 Shelby right after changing to an Optima AGM battery...not sure if the extra volt / consistent voltage was enough to push an old coil over the edge? Anyway I cannot remember the exact reason why but I added a resistor when I did the upgrade assuming I must have been told the more efficient e-core has a lower resistance and will burn out the driver in the TBI ECU? Can anyone confirm this? Pretty sure the Shelby was the only TBI V8 ECU unless one can be used from a Ram truck or van?
Rather than mount an MSD to the firewall I would rather use an OEM Magnum engine coil, I was told they were mounted directly to the block and possibly the bracket would work on an LA-engine? Can anyone confirm this?
