Get a good cap/rotor and maybe upgrade to decent 8mm wires.
I bought the "premium" United Motor Products 17624 Link from the page my order confirmation directs to.

I got the exhaust back together. got the muffler and tail pie out and put it on the table then went after the piece of CAT pipe left in the inlet I cut it using a die grinder with a conical rotary file and using a hack saw blade in a holder for such cuts. It took some sticktooitiveness but that and hitting a big screw driver and a 16 oz ball peen and a propane torch to soften it got it to move so I knew it wasn't frozen by rust. Just over two hours to get it out. The new CAT has a smaller pipe. Turned out an off the shelf straight connector pipe 2 1/2" ID slipped on to it and filled the gap. I clamped both, the muffler in the old spot and the 2 1/2" pipe. a couple inches away just to be sure. The Y end fit fine. It ran loud then quieted down. Idle is good. I will take it out for a drive tomorrow. Maybe go take some pictures in the mountains.
The pipe end

Yesterday I put in 10 gallons of gas to fill up, having driven 155 miles on the tank. Then I took my drive up in the mountains When I got home I had done 238 miles. It took 11.2 gallons to fill it back up. That is an increase in mileage from the usual even before this issue of 15-16 mpg to 21+mpg. I took a scenic byway and was driving uphill from 2k ft to 5300 ft at 35 mph often much less for a couple of hours in twisties the rest was hwy speeds. I had thought that I would be getting worse mileage.
Did I do my maths wrong?
