Default 2.5 to 3.9 dodge dakota

Hey i'm needing some assistance on how i would make this work, i have a 1995 dodge dakota 2.5 5 speed and i blew the motor in it. my buddy had a 1999 dodge Dakota 3.9 5 speed that he wrecked and has given me the whole truck. i wanna put this 3.9 in my Dakota but don't know how i would go about the pcm and all that with it being a obd2 engine. i have all the wiring and everything just not the know how with the computer. dont know if this is the right forum.

well the easiest would be swap all electronics including the dash, but being different gens, the dash cluster swap would not look clean or factory, at least not without major customization.

The best way i can think would be to run all the electronics from the new motor, obd port up to the dash ect but keep the factory wiring and pcm in place. the obd1 stuff will be dumb, you just need to provide a second temp and oil pressure sensor to keep the dash working.

If you have a tach currently, that could be hard to hookup.

reverse side, you could find another 3.9 truck your model year and salvage the pcm and wiring from it and use the 3.9 motor you found. this would keep the dash cluster happy, with minimal overlay, going from 4 to 6cyl is the biggest hurdle, your current wiring wont support the extra cylinders, i would imagine the pcm could possibly be tuned for the 3.9 if you have the correct wiring

so if i find the wiring and the pcm out of a 95 dodge dakota 3.9 it'll work without having to do programming right?

Correct. And that will be the easiest route to make it work.

Keep in mind, the 99 motor will NOT have a provision for the second coolant temp sensor.... So, you would either need to drill and tap the existing manifold, or, get a 97 or older intake. Another issue you will run into is, the older systems used EGR, while the 96 and up did not.

If you are going to go thru all the trouble of a motor swap..... I would be real tempted to source a 5.2 for the swap.... Same process, but, more smiles at the end.

Do you think the AX15 will stand up to that? I thought the NV3500 was to lite for the 4.7
