Engine randomly stalls NEed Advice!
Hi, I have a 1992 Dodge Dakota LE V8 5.2L 4WD and I can not figure out how to make her reliable. The truck randomly stalls and does not always start up immediately. I drive the truck daily and have gone days without problems. Other days she has stalled on me a few blocks from my house. Sometimes she can be restarted immediately, other times I would be able to start her up later in the day. I recently changed the ignition coil with no luck. Does anyone have any advice as to what I might be able to replace to get her back to speed. Thanks Charlie
Sounds Weird, but Fuel pump. Mine did the exact same thing when it was going bad. Put a fuel guage on it when it wont start, and see what you got. 35 psi for the vacume hooked up, and 39 without the vacume to the regulator.
My truck has started to do the same thing. I have put a new fuel pump in recently maybe a year ago at the most. I know I'm getting fuel to the throttle body. I have noticed that when I turn the key on it continuously pumps gas into the throttle body and its flooding out my engine. It will stall on me and won't satart, so Ihave to take out my plugs and dry them and put them back in and it will fire up again. I'm thinking I have a problem with a relay somewhere. I'm going check my injectors with a spare set that I have. Hopefully I can figure out the problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
You have a 92 with throttle body injection?
If so, I guess its an early production. The fuel pump should cycle to build pressure and then cut off, until the engine is running, then it should run continuously.

Sorry, I have a 91 w/ a throttle body, I forgot that 92 is when they switched to the mpfi. I'm going to change my Fuel pressure regulator and if that doesn't work out I'll have to look for a short in my injectors. I think this is the problem b/c my left injector stopped working. I have an extra throttle body to through on but its been too damn cold out.

I have the same problem on a 92 Dakota. We had the computer changed out the first time the problem occured. (After paying for 6 hrs of technician time to track the problem down.) Afterward the engine would randomly stall while driving. We had the computer checked again and it looked OK. Since the I have found that when it stalls I can jiggle the connector where all of the wiring enters/exits the computer and then start the engine. This fix works every time. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a permanent fix for this problem. If anyone knows one I would love to hear it.

I live in the mountains of northern PA, this winter has been more windy then cold. I almost got crushed by a picnic table blowing in the wind the last time I went out to my truck. I also had a concern with my hood being torn off. Spring is around the corner so I think I can wait for that.
I had the same problem w/ my 92 dak w/ 318 mpfi. I'm a auto tech & this thing had me going.
I called a tech at our local Dodge dealer & he told me to replace the crank sensor & dist. pickup.
I did & has been fine since then. Hope this helps

Yeah I have found that my randon stalling was cause by the hall effect pickup under the dist. cap. Either that or check the interruptor that sits below that. The rivets wear out causing this piece to shift now n then. Parts store here wanted me to buy whole new distriutor. I said uhhh no. Mine was moving so I just drilled two new holes and popped in a couple more rivets. Easy fix for now.
