Default Grinding noise before 4wd is engaged.

I was driving my truck today and i went to put it into 4wd high. Before it engaged, it made a grinding noise. Any ideas on what this is?

Thanks.

My '95 recently had a similar problem after i had the transfercase resealed, what happenend was when they rehooked the shift linkage, they didn't adjust it properly (subsequently I got stuck in 4H!), as I would try to get it out of 4H it would make grinding noises, I grabbed the Haines manual and adjusted it per their directions and haven't had problems. Check your shift linkage
Also, as these trucks get older, the vibration of normal driving causes the whole engine/tran/case assembly to shimmy and shake and that can also cause shift linkage to slip and pop out of adjustment. Hope this helps!

Thanks. Did you do it yourself? If you did, was it hard?

Nvm. I saw that you "Grabbed the heines book". Was it hard to do by yourself?
