Default 95 dakota tachometer

My tachometer works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it will run smoothly and sometimes it will jump wildly or just sit on 0. Does anyone have any solutions for this problem? Where does the feed for the tach originate? Thanks Don

I think there is a tach control module on the 95s. Pull the gauge panel, and you chould see a secondary circuit board on the corner. Sometimes a quick cleaning of the contacts and slight rebending of the contact blades inside the socket housing can help.

Default 95 dodge tachometer

My Dodge had the problem with tach jumping around. I found the ignition coil was weak but replacing it did not solve the problem. What solved the problem was changing spark plugs. Sounds crazy but that is what worked. A week later the problem came back. I then tracked down the crankshaft sensor unit and replaced it. That seems to have totally solved the problem. On my Dakota the crankshaft sensor is located behind the left cylinder head between the distributor and the exhaust manufold. You need a very long allen wrench to remove the bolts that hold the sensor in place. I had to remove the distributor cap and wires, EGR valve and the oil pressure sending unit to get the crankshaft sensor out and back in.

Your tach should be connected to the distributor. Usually one wire, sometimes 2 wires. At least thats where mine is connected.

All of the fuel injected dakots rpm gauges are hooked up to the pcm. The reason it jumps is a bad ground to the gauge on the back of the gauge paneling. Take the gauges out and clean the ground and that should solve your issue

I'm having the same problem and I already have the whole gauge cluster out to change some bulbs. Where is the ground?

Hmm... Maybe thats why sometimes I'm confused about some of the forum guys postings. I'm starting to believe the previous owner did some mods on this truck. Wish I had a Delorean so I can go back in time and smack the bastard in the head for all the headaches he's giving me.

Problem of tach jumping around is back. Now the engine will not even start. Checked coil again and it is okay. Checked fuel pump pressure and that is 40psi so that is ok. The guy at AutoZone has suggested two ideas. First the crankshaft sensor and second the filter on the fuel pump could be clogged as the truck has 125k miles. Has anyone found it necessary to change these items?
