Default Back Brakes

My 92 Dakota 2wd does not have any back brakes at all. They are there, but they are not working lets put it that way. My brake light is on as well as my anti-lock brake light. I would rather fix the problem myself than bring it into a shop and if possible get rid of the antilock system all together. Any suggestions as to why my brakes aren't working would be appreciated. Thanks

I had to replace both lines from the center of the rear axle out. Also replaced the rear wheel cyl's. This on a 1992 ex cab V8

Jack up the rear. Pull the access port on the back of the drum and you will see the star wheel adjuster. Use a flat blade screwdriver, or better yet a brake tool. Adjust them until they just start to drag. Mine was like that for a while, adjusted them properly and made a huge difference.

Also - pull the drum and check the condition of the wheel brake cylinder. Make sure there are no cracks, tears or leaks from the rubber boots. Replace as needed - they are cheap from Autozone.

If you rear brakes are way out of adjustment, they will trip the brake warning system due to excessive travel.
