It's only a 115HP'd motor with a good 1,000lbs more than a 4cyl car, so I'm sure it lags a bit. The only thing I could really recommend for power would be a motor swap.

You could always do like I am thinking about and drop in a turbo engine from one of the turbo cars. Then the only lag you would really have to worry about would be turbo lag. Or do like someone did to my truck and drop in a larger engine. But Im still mixed up about yanking the 6 they put in and dropping a forcefed four banger back in it. If it wasnt for the fact that I have an 2.2l turboII engine from a shelby car, and most of the other parts in the storage shed behind my garage. I prolly wound't even think of doing it. Also the guy before me put a 6 in and left the four banger front suspension on it (he liked how it looked, nevermind the bouncing it encounters when I hit a bump). I have a couple months yet to decide. Also more will it work for sure planning. But after I found out the 2.5 was the same engine thats in the cars I have owned...the ol gears started turning. I would imagine it would perform like a 6 with the turbo engine in the mostly stock form its in. Not as well as an 8 I dont think with the power to weight ratio. Maybe with alot of boost.........but I dont think Ill go that route. I have no plans of towing anything and about the only thing it hauls is my garbage and my wheel horse on occasion.

Just a thought tho........
