Additional tip for this thread. Bought our 89 from Mr.Backyard. Found out he used her for a parts truck and robbed dist.cap and let her sit.Spark timing plate in dist was so rusty it coated the magnetic pickup that times the spark with rust and she would not fire. Replaced Dist without the "rust Option ", fixed the problem.

I also have similer problem but the asd will only give power to the coil for a second then shuts of the power ....like a short or open circit further down the line.Have opened up all the wiring back to the PCM and the computer and checked continuity on all circits involved with ASD but no luck. Changed Computer....crankshaft position sensor......camshaft sensor....O2 sensor....ignition switch ....coil and ASD relay. Getting code saying ASD problems open or shorted circit. Any ideas? Also fuel pump relay is working....40 lbs pressure at the fuel rail.

Default Corroded Splice - Picture

SOLUTION!! My 93 Dakota wouldn't start, then would sometimes start and die, so checked absolutely everything because there was no spark, and no power to teh computer. The problem turned out to be the splice under the fuse/relay box. Same as other postings I started to peel and cut the tape away from the bundle of wires and sure enough where they were spliced was corroded as hell. What a relief as I was just about to tow it and have many $ for a mechanic probably not find anything. The splice is about 6 inches back from the fusebox towards the firewall. Thanks for all the postings everyone!

Default 93 dodge dakota cranks but wont start

hello ive got a 93 dodge Dakota that will crank but wont start but if i put a little fuel in the carb and it starts right up and runs and drive fine and will start up again fine but if i wait an hour or so it wont start up again unless i put fuel in the carb again. ive checked the splice under the relay box and its good and ive changed out the fuel relay fuse. changed the spark plugs and wires checked the distributor cap and rotor and their fine. ive checked the fuel pump and its kicking on. i checked the fuel filter and changed it out just to be safe and also getting fuel in the fuel rails and injectors. im absolutely stumped on this please help!

If you've got a carb, you may need to talk to whoever modified that truck ...

If, however, you've got the throttle body a 1993 should have, then I'd be checking fuel pressure. You have the symptoms of the pressure bleeding off the fuel line.

(And "It sprays a bunch!" isn't the answer, "It's at 23.5/43.5/127.9 psi" is the answer. And it's supposed to be at 31PSI at idle with the vacuum line connected, 39PSI when it's disconnected.

If it's not close, then try the prime test.

Turn the ignition ON (but don't START), wait ten seconds, turn it off. Repeat two more times. Does it start right up after those three cycles?

Nope. I bought a '93 with the 3.9 back in '93 and it had TBI. That's how I know about cleaning gooky stuff (<---fancy technical term) when it doesn't want to idle.
