I am new
I have a 1989 Dodge Dakota. I am looking to get another truck so I can put my engine and tranny in it because the body is falling off. I would love to know if anyone can tell me if you can put the engine from 1989 into a 1992 dakota? Let me know if you can.

Short Answer: Yes.
Long Answer:
A 1989 Dakota. That would mean you have either a 2.5L I4 or a 3.9L V6, correct? Both of those engines are throttle body fuel injected (fuel and air is mixed at the throttle body, which than enter the intake manifold, you don't have fuel injectors) in 1989.
From 1992 on, the 3.9L V6 (and 5.2L V8 for that matter) was multi-port fuel injected (the air entered through the throttle body, but the fuel was "given" to the cylinders via fuel injectors, 1 per cylinder). From I believe 1996 on, the 2.5L I4 was multi-port fuel injected.
Along with multi-port fuel injection came higher power (they also re-did some stuff, such as heads, manifolds, and some other stuff, which probably accounts for more than the MPFI). The TBFI 2.5L made 99PHP, 3.9L made 125HP, and 5.2L made 170HP. The MPFI 2.5L made 120HP (although it was not the same manufacturer as before, the "new" 2.5L was actually a Jeep engine), 3.9L made 175HP (180HP 1992-1993), and 5.2L made 220HP (230HP 1992-1993).
The engine and transmission should fit the same (if you have the 2.5L, somethings may be differant, I wouldn't know). You will HAVE TO take the computer (and probably some wiring harnesses) out of your '89 and put it in the "new" truck. The computer on MPFI engines (like 1992-up Dakotas) control fuel going into cylinders, not so on yours.
