Default 93 Dakota Issues

Hey,this is my first time using this site and ive seen alot of great help so hopefully i get some good answer......I own a 93 dodge dakota.3.9 liter, with about 143,000 miles on it.My truck one day wouldnt start,so i get it home and found out it wasnt geting much gas if any.So i replacded the pump and it started up but still ran very rough and smoked alot and sometimes even died...so i took it to the dealer and they didnt have anything good to say.about 10 things that wouldnt benefit me in any wya.so my uncle came over and said that the vacum line to the egr vavle was out.so he pushed it back in and it ran but smoked.I replaced the aic and it stop the smoking a good amount but it still idles very weird and smokes sometimes...at 25 mph if i take my foot of the gas it will idle to about 900 then jump to 1100 then back down to 900...its very strange.i kno there was alot of raw gas ran through it and the throttle body and combustion chamber is sluged up which i plan on cleaning...any ides on what that might be?

Go ahead and run some cleaner through (SeFoam is said to be good stuff, follow the directions on the can :most people pour it down the brake booster vacuum line FYI. Also, it wouldn't hurt to run some fuel injection system cleaner as well (add to the fuel tank).

Any way, using the trouble shooting option on the scanner it pointed to the crankshaft sensor. It said to check the flywheel for damage or dirt as this would cause the sensor to give errors. I removed the [crankshaft position] sensor which was filthy and replaced it and it solved the problem. The timing graph is nice and smooth now with clear cut changes at rpm changes. By the way the scanner had the following specs for the fuel system. I checked these on mine and they were within these parameters. Fuel system pressure with vacum hose to fuel pressure regulator disconnected - 39.0 - 41.0 psi. With vacum hose connected - 31.0 psi. Fuel pump pressure 75 psi. Not sure if any of this will help at all, but thanks for all the posts it sure helped me. I know you have changed the crank sensor on yours but you may want to check for dirt or damage to your flywheel. Does yours run rough all the time or is it intermittent?
The problem this guy was having was the same kind of like the problem you are having, except his would always die off.
You may want to try disconnecting the vacuum line going from the evap canister solenoid to the engine and capping it off (the solenoid may be stuck in the open position, causing a condition). FYI, we do not have EGR (exhaust gas recirc) on these engines, so, therefore, I assume your talking about the vacuum line that runs to the canister on the passenger side front of the vehicle to the said solenoid. (which is located on the driver side rear of the engine)

Post back with results.

Hit the cat with a rubber mallet, if it rattles, its bad. However, keep in mind, just because it does not rattle does not mean it is not bad.

I wouldn't recommend "taking it in" to get cleaned because you will more-than-likely get wallet r@ped for something you can do with no effort. Just go to a local auto parts store, spend $6 on a bottle of SeaFoam engine treatment, and follow the directions on the can (follow the part about pouring it thru a vacuum line). While your there, pickup a bottle of fuel injector cleaner to throw in the fuel tank.

YOu can dump thew seafoam right in the tank. I will help clean the gas lines all the way to the motor. Do it a couple of times. I did it and gained 4 miles per gallon. and what really helps when you do that is get out on the hwy and let it good and hot. it does wounders well at least for me. replace fule filter to. its back by the tank. other than that carb cleaner in the carb. spray it down wait like 10 min and start it let it run bor a bit so you don't flud it out. i have the same year truck with multi port injection. have any other ?'s drop me a line at pioneerbirdy@hotmail.com name Randy

Its just stuff in a 16 oz white (metal I believe) bottle. It says something like "engine treatment" on it. Put some in your tank to clean the gas lines and fuel injectors, dump some down the vacuum line I talked about to clean the intake valves and better part of the motor.

one thing u could do is do like one of my friends did "and this was so he would not ruin his warranty and get it inspected and they would say nothing" And that is to cut off your cat and beat all the **** out of it then u take another piece of tubeing and slide it inside and weld it or there is a special glue u can get and it will stay. I did something close to that but i just cut mine off and put a piece of tubing in its place to my 94 3.9L cause i had a problem with mine sending some nasty smoke out and that fixed my problem.

There is a hose (a vacuum line) going from the driver side of the engine to the bottom of the powerbrake booster (the round cylinder behind the master cylinder [where you add brake fluid]). With the engine running, disconnect the line from the power brake booster, pour the specified amount down the line, and after a few seconds, turn the engine off. Wait for a few minutes (around 5??) and than start her up and look out the exhaust.
