Default RE: 88 dakota will not idle

i checked the codes again and now there is a 24. I cant remeber but I think it is the tps.
well we pushed it onto the trailer today and took it out to my shop. I noticed it not getting any gas at all. I checked the fuel pump and its not working. I put a new fuel filter in it to see if it did anything but it didn't. I had an electic fuel pump laying around. so I slpiced it in where the fuel filter goes and it wouldnt suck anything. but yet I stuck it in a jar of gas and it sucked it dry. can the fuel even be pumped thru the stock fuel pump? and it filled the truck up to 1/2 just to make sure there was gas in it. or does the tps control the fuel pump? I know when I turn the key the tps makes a buzzing sound for a second. what does the tps control anyway? I took an air nozzel to the fuel line and blew them clean but that didnt help either.
A guy that rents a shop beside mine has a diagnostic computer for 89-95 dodges. I tried to put it on mine but it said it couldnt get a connection. mine is an 88 so maybe it couldn't read it.
anymore suggestions?

so the tps has nothing to do with the fuel pump?
how hard is it to test or change the fuel pump?
I know i would have to drop the tank but what else do I have to do?
so the tps will control how much fuel it is getting and thats why it was running rich when It actually did run?

A few things to check before dropping the fuel tank:
The auto shutdown relay will interrupt power to the fuel pump, injectors and coil if there is no ignition signal when the ignition switch is the RUN position. Try checking it; you might also want to check the hall effect assy and the rest of the distributor. There is also a splice in the wiring harness near the power distribution center that goes bad (search "splice" in this forum).

Greg

well we FINALLY got her goin. we finally got the computer to hook up. it said about 5 differnt codes! we jumped the relay for the fuel pump and the fuel pump would run but no fuel was comming out. so I decided to drop the tank. I just cut the straps. then when we took the sending unit off we seen that there was a rubber fuel line that broke inside it. so thats why it wouldnt pump any fuel. I dont know how that would have happend.(maybe when I took the air hose to all the fuel line it coud have snapped the ruber line inside the tank.) I had to replace the pickup coil, the coolant temp. sensor, the tps, some relay on the drivers side fender, and the fuel filter. all together was around $200, so thats not too bad.
thanks for all the help.

Currently the O2 sensor in my truck is bad. O2 sensors are only used when truck is warmed to operating temp so for a temp solution I unplugged my coolant temp sensor. This was more a test to make sure the O2 was the prob and it is. With the coolant temp sensor unplugged my truck does the SAME thing. Replace your coolant temperature sensor and truck will run fine.
