Timing is 180 off, how do I fix it?
Hello Dakota Dodge Dudes, I am back with even more questions but first thanks to all who helped me get my heating/AC blower motor & headlights & for the fuse box layouts.
My timing is off by 180 or so I am told but how do I fix it?
My timing chain broke, put on the new one but my timing was off be 180 engine would run but did not idol well at all. My question is if I pull the distributor out and set the timing & reinstall the distributor will that fix the 180 off problem? Thanks in advance for your help people.

Well from my expirences, you just pull the distributor cap off, then remove the bolt that holds it down. Lift it out slowly untill the shaft clears the slot it's in. Then carfully turn it 180 and put it back in. This only works if you put the new timing chain in properly. I've done it several times when working on my vehicles, and other too. I've heard of vehicles that don't let you turn it 180 out, so this would mean your got the chain on wrong. I don't know what vehicles are like that. It's just something someone told me once. You didn't mention if you had the V6 or V8. I've never had a V6 apart yet.

I have a Dakota 94 3.9 V6, we did turn the distributor 180 then it ran really good until I replaced the rotor and the plugs and wires so now is idols rough but runs really good after you get past the idol being rough. Today I am going to make sure I got the wires on right then if I do turn the distributor just a bit.
