Default Trans control cable

I took off the air cleaner assembly today to check things out and make sure everything is ok. Well, it turns out everything is not![:@] The trans control cable (the one that comes up from the back and hooks to the throttle linkage) has a little plastic thing that connects it to the linkage. That little peice is broken, and the cable was just sitting there not connected. What is the purpose and function of this cable?
Thanks

Default RE: Trans control cable

on my old dodge dart, that was a mechanical inkage, it controlled the passing gear and without it the tranny wouldnt change gears when it should. might be the same thing on the newer vehicles, but im not a mechanic.
