Default starter problems

What would cause the starter to keep disengaging after a few cranks? It will eventually stay engaged long enought to start, but only after about 10/15 tries.

If all the teeth are good then it sounds like it is the relay on the starter itself.

If you pull the starter and are cheap.... you can pull the solenoid apart and clean up the brass contacts with some sand paper and it will work like brand new. I did my uncles 318 starter that way 4 years ago and it is still working perfectly.

I agree that it's probably the starter going bad, but here are some other things to check:
1.Check your battery, connections and cables as well; this operation takes quite a bit of juice.

2.Your starter could be out of alignment; check to see if there is any reason why it may tilt or move causing the teeth to not mesh properly.

If you decide to tear the starter down, here are a couple of helpful pages
