Default 4x4 Wont engage

I have a 1990 dakota 3.9 4x4 and the 4x4 wont engage. When i pull the lever back and go an inch, the light comes on and i dont hear it even try to engage. It just stopped working. Any Ideas? Thanks.

Nope, no noise. It use to make noise when it was engaging. But now it doesnt. When i pull the leaver back and go literally an inch the 4wd light comes on but nothing happens at all. And for the linkages, i dont know.

The switch for the light might be out of adjustment... I can't say about the Tcases on the on the Dakotas, but my Ram charger the light would come on WAY before the lever was far enough to make the case engage.

Check the linkage...mine came apart right underneath the handle one time. I ended up going under and just using electric tape to hold it while I clicked it back into 2WD, ha. Worked alright until I got it fixed..but definitely check that.

Im actually having a similar problem with my 96 4x4, but it wont engage into 4 high, only the low. I will check the linkages but i would imagine that if one works then the linkages must be ok?

any input would be appreciated

Thanks
Mike

your linkages could either be broke or just out of alignment

Is your front differential activating? If the front axle is turning when in 4wd, and you still only have 2wd, then your vacuum actuator might not be working properly. I had the same problem on my '89. I accidently pinched one of the vacuum lines off when putting in one of the transmission braces.
