Look into the timing chain. The only thing holding that chain tight is a piece of plastic. If that plastic breaks, it can cause the timing chain to rattle and tick because its free floating in the timing case.

Well it's time for a rebuild, found the parts I need cheap by calling around. One of the parts I need isn't cheaper then the rest but hey I'm paying for quality. Well I took off the oil pan and what did I find anything good perhaps NOPE! I started out by filtering the oil before I took off the oil pan (looking for metal fragments) didn't find anything. Well I took off the oil pan and what did my eyes find? My big eyes, found metal chunks. Well during inspection of it, I found that the number 3 piston was shattering with every stroke. The crank is find and so is the cam and so is the cylinder walls no scaring what so ever (god I'm lucky). Well the correct way to do it is to replace all 4 pistons, bearings and rings, now the question is what am I going to do, replace one or all 4. Well I'm going to replace all 4, found the pistons, main bearings and rings for the low low price of $240. Now on Thursday, I'm gonna be putting it back together with the new parts lol. Hopefully I'll be lucky and I wont have to do anymore work to it for a while. But I'll still be on here answering questions or posting them as well.

Yea I'm glad I found it to, now the hard part is waiting for parts, they should be in by Thursday and it should be running by Thursday night or Friday morning. Depended on if I have to go to Pool League on Thursday (hoping I can play it off so I can pull an all nighter and get this beast running.) and Auron your tap might not be coming from the same spot mine was, I discovered mine by taking it apart, putting it back together and finding out it wasn't that problem, but a different one. But doing a lot of research on the motor and searching threads in a few Jeep forums I found it was a common problem with the AMC 2.5 blocks where either the Number 4 Piston or the Number 3 Piston goes after you hit 100k. But the way I look at it is, now I'll have a fully rebuilt block, and the knowledge to rebuild these motors and help me out in the future. Now I just wish I could reset the Odometer and bring it back down to 000000 but that wont happen lol.

Auron, I'm not condoning your mechanic, but with replacing the pistons you don't have to remove the cam or the timing chain so that makes it easier. Download the manual for the truck, because you can turn it into a weekend project and do it yourself if you take your time and get all the right parts.

Kahanabob, well I got lucky I the walls are very clean and nice looking, so I lucked out and don't have to hone them out. I've had the owner of the shop look at them and same thing with his son who works there when he's not in school and they both said if I drove it more then I did I would have to if not bore them out and so with a .10 or .20 over.

Tomorrow I have to go down to the shop and remove the arms and pins out of the pistons but I took a picture of the one bad one to show you the damage of the piston and how much of a chunk that was came off.

That looks like a fresh break. My question is, what did it hit?

It didn't hit anything that's the thing. One of the master techs I know, looked at it and said it is a common issue with my motor after it hits 100k+ he said the people who made the pistons didn't think the motors would run for as long as they did. Nothing I did caused it, it just happens
