simple - make sure your rotor button is aligned (at least close) to the no. 1 cylinder fire. then put the gears on so the dimples match, there easy to see. nothing to it.
i rebuilt a slant 6 dodge in the early 80`s. there was no distributor in it when i aligned the the timing chain. i checked and the piston was TDC. the thing i did not account for was weather it was exhaust or intake that was open. i had put the valve covers on to make it look pretty to the teacher. it would not start and i figured out the problem. i simply rotated the distributor 180 degrees.

got it all done i just have to get a timing light on it to set the timing, im up in canada, i didnt want to wait for shipping and we seem to pay more for stuff here.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong but, I don't believe you "set" the timing on these trucks in this model year. The computer takes care of this.

 

Thanks man. There are several different timing set options though. I'm not sure which one to choose. I'd definitely like to go with a double chain/sprocket though. Should I also get a new tensioner?

 

your not wrong, you dont use a timing light to set timing.

 

well its at a shop now to figure it out, my 3.9 didnt have a tensioner on the timing chain,
i found my invoice and the timing set was $62 and the gasket set was $12.50

 

well i got it back , they caid the dist was out by 25 deg, so they fixed that and got it running ut they had it hooked up to a fuel pressure guage and when it was running the pressure slowly dropped, so i drove it home and changed the fuel pump and its been running great now.

 

ive just always lined up teh dots then played with teh distributor when cranked to turn and play. i like a little advance from time to time'
