omg the gas mileage...
i've got the 4.7L and in town on get about 14-15 and interstate I get about 16-17. I do the math at the pump though, I don't look at the sensor in the D because I think that is about 1 mile/gallon below normal. It does take a lot, last week I filled it up and it cost $49.00. Welcome to the SUV club, and Happy belated Earth Day (note the sarcasm, hehehe, I don't care about wasting gas).

I have 02 Durango R/T. I get about 10 miles/gallon. 8 when towing. Is this as good as it's gonna get???? Are all the 5.9l like this??

Remember, aftermarket tires and rims can affect the odometer calcs. Also, the overhead computer is NEVER accurate. Most are off 1-2MPG. Finally, the D gets bad gas milage, but you should see 12-14 on a 5.9L mildly modified or stock.
+1 on the tune up idea. New plug wires, new rotor and cap and new plugs will make a difference. A new O2 sensor will help too.

Make sure your tire pressure is right. Running a pound or two over the owner's manual recommendation never hurt. NEVER exceed the tire's sidewall max. pressure.....

if the motor is working right, o2's clean and working, tune up etc... there are mods that should get you into the 14's easy. I had my 2000 ram qc 4x4 doing 14's on the hiway... IIRC, it weighed 500+ lbs more than the D's...
my best gues is an O2 sensor is causing you to run very rich......make sure you replace both, i believe there are only two, one close to the header, and another neat the cat
a clogged cat would also murder yourgas mileage.
make sure that you intake is clean.....air filter, and throttle body, however I don't think if they were dirty it would hurt your mileage that much. If your D starts, idles and runs fine I believe you could count most of that out

Greetings WK:
I see you have discovered the one significant negative Durango about ownership. I like how one D owner likes to pass on this fact about the Durango:
"One needs to either learn to accept it, or get rid of the beast!" Our Durangos weigh 4500-4800 pounds to begin with, and then you add on the eye pleasing but less than aerodynamic factor of its "brick through the air shape", and the best case scenario is 10-12 mpg when driving mostly in town, and 16-18 when driven mostly highway. Your 5.9 motor will be 1-2mpg less than that 4.7/5.2 owners, but any of these figures can be lessened by towing or other mechanical problems.
Bottom line is that all Gen 1 Durango ownersquickly realizewhy DC put a 25 gallon tank on them, andBTW Gen 2 D's have a 27 gallon tank.
As some here have said, you might have an issue with your 02 sensors which can make the engine run rich, or possibly it is time for plugs and a rotor and cap. My window sticker says 13 city and 18 hwy. They were telling the truth.
