I have a 2001 durango 4.7
Lately I my my RPM gauge has been surging up and down as well as the car surging forward when I am stopped. I just recently had a tune up which I thought would solve the problem, NOT.. I took it back and the dealer said I had a bad IAC and they replaced it, the problem is not gone but it doesn't idle as much. Also I just found out, by the receipt, that when I had the tune up they gave me Bosch Platinum plugs, could spark plugs be attributing to my problem as no other codes or electrical problems could be found.

 

Take it back to them and tell them to put champion plugs back in it plat's suck in D's also it could be your TPS causing the idle problem.

 

Get those plugs out of that truck!

 

yes those plugs can cause all kinds of problems with these trucks so get them changed NOW!!!!!!

 

Had the guys change out the Bosche plugs back to champions and I can really tell the difference. The car does not idle recklessly anymore but on occasions it does lurch forward or when I speed up , maybe around 60 -70 MPH it kicks in like it shifting gears... any ideas....

But getting back to changing the spark plugs man with the Champions I an not sitting at a stop light and having my car shake like crazy...

NP glad you came here and saw it was a simple fix. The lurching problem sounds weird is it just revving a little on it's own? If so change the TPS and that should take care of it. as far as the tranny downshifting when you are 60-70 are you accelerating hard?

 

as far as the downshifting I am noticing it is always happening when I do accelerate hard even at low speeds.

Your issue is not the plugs, but the Throttle Position Sensor. The OEM TPS has been known to create the tendency you describe. These have been redesigned, to prevent the uneven idling/surging/engine racing problem. This same issue was previously discussed in an earlier post, where an individual was misled by both a local mechanic and Dealer, through replacing everything, but the TPS. I had the same problem, for some time on my 2001, 4.7. Bought the part at my local Auto Zone for $60 and put it in, in 10 minutes (need a torx driver). The problem was gone immediately and the vehicle has never run better.
