99 Durango
Hi folks, new guy here. I have a 99 Durango, 4x4, v8 (not sure if it's the 5.2 or 5.9 - where do I check?), 100,000+ miles. A couple of problems. First, my brake light and ABS light are both on, and my speedometer doesn't work until I reach 45-50 mph. AutoZone said it was the speed control sensor. Changed that, same thing.
Secod and more serious problem. I'm stuck in 4 wheel drive. The truck will not come out of 4 wheel at all. I've tried backing u, neutral, low gear and shifting all the way into 4 low, then out, nothing works. I need to get this fixed asap, so any help would work, even ifit's just a suggestion of what manual to buy for it.
Ona related note, I checked the transmission fluid, and it was overfull with a bunch of air bubbles. I'm not a great mechanic - limited to basic maintenance - but I'm guessing maybe a vacuum line?
Thanks for any help/suggestions.

I had the same problem as far as the ABS/speedo problem. I replaced the sensor in the rear end and it fixed it. There is a switch/sensor for the 4x4 ($65), thats probably bad. If you have the extra cash, I would get a trans flush/filter change.
Thanks for the tips. I had all ready planned on doing the trans flush & filter. Where is that sensor in the back? I found one on the trans that looked exactly like the one they gave me at AutoZone, so I changed that one. Problem is still there, however.
I would recommend you to also change the sensor just toward the back end of the tranny. Usually this sensor and the sensor on the rear axle complements each other so if one goes out, it is best to change both of them out.
Hi Al:
As far as identifying your engine, check out the 8th character of the VIN. Sould be a Y for 5.2. and a Z for the 5.9.
When you try to pull the T case back to 2wd, does it feel like the linkage is moving properly/at all. Kind of sounds like a loose or disconnected linkage issue.
Good Luck Don

The speed sensor on the rear diff is located on the top/drivers' side of the middle housing. It's a simple unplug, unbolt, and replace. I had to do the same thing. My ABS light didn't come on, but, my BRAKE light did.

Thank for the tips. I found the sticker on the hood that says 5.9. I'm kinda tall (6'5") and have a bad back, so I couldn't bend down far enough to read the sticker.
I guess I have my week set now. Thanks everyone.
