Default Trailer Weight

I looks like my truck will tow 7300 LBS with the 5.9L and 392 gears OEM.
I want to buy a travel trailer and want about a 27 foot with a super slide. With that combo on the trailer they weigh in a lot more. What do you guy's think about a trailer for me? Anyone towing travel trailers out there? I have 3 kids and a wife. I want them to have there own beds tho.

I have a 17 foot with fold out beds. It sleeps the 4 of us fine. There is a floorplan we like for out next camper that has double bunks in the back, which would be great for 3 kids and a Queen up front. That was a 29 footer though. It's a pretty standard lay out. I'll bet you could fiind a similiar floor plan in 27 foot. Look at the Ultra-lites and such. And keep in mind the Tongue weight. The slide may not be an option though. That's probably alot of extra weight. For us to get the camper we want, we are gonna have to get an Excursion. (I'll be keeping the D too!!) Or You could look at a 20-24 footer with 1 slide. That would probably be pushing it and then you still need to factor in 5 people and gear. The slides are nice, but other than a rainy day they serve little purpose. I don't really blame you for wanting one though, I do to. But with a D, your options are limited to a smaller camper more than likely. Find aCamper show locally and look at all the campers with "lite" in them. Then Pit salesman against salesman for a good deal!!

What year is your D? I could swear mine is rated for 7800 lbs.

Ans the thing that concerns me most about towing to capacity is the strain on the Tranny.

Dude it's all in the sig.

My trans is built like a brick **** house. The last thing I'm worried about is my build up. The main thing I'm looking at is the weight rating on the rear axels and housings.

1st gen durangos can pull 7500 lbs with 3:92 gears and 5.9 engines.
2nd gen durangos can pull 8900 lbs I think with the hemi.

I would hate to see your D to pull something so close to its tow limits! Don't know what can prematurely wear out. Usually I would prefer to get a diesel rig if I plan to pull something that big and heavy. I can see your mpg go down the toilet pulling something like that!

Aren't they already low enough

I have a 84 Starcraft 19' that I towed to a mountain CG and it towed with NP I have( and will put my specs in soon but I have a 99 4WD Green, [another mean green] 5.9) I was going along and for me it is hard to drive slower than 75, but several times I looked down and was doin 80 and looked up and the PU was fine. The thing that made the trip sweet was the 4WD. The road to my fav spot is tiny and windy to a 7200 elevation so being in 4WD low made that so easy.

Ihave a 99 5.9L with the 3.5 gears (5900 lbs max trailer)
Couple of years ago I towed a 20' holiday trailer from where I live to San Diego and back, about 4200 miles round trip. Only mods were a K&N air filter, an auxiliary trans cooler and synthetic oil in engine and rear end. Other than running extremely hot in southern Nevada, no problems.

We just bought a 24' ultra-light trailer, 1 pull out,2 kids sleep on 2 rear bunks and the 3rd on the hideabed couch. I believe this trailer is 3800 lbs empty. On a short test trip, got 9.5-10mpg.

I would seriously look at the "ultra light" trailers. Some have pullouts, I believe they make them 27' and longer.

I have the 5.2 w/ tow group. 3.92 trans cooler...My rating shouldbe 5900lbs.I've had a 2500lb boat and a 2300 lb pop up trailer. Pulled both with no problem. We bought a TT last night. It's a 20 ft heavy. Not the lite. That's good advise. It's GVWR is3900. I'm not sure what the dry weight is. We bought it used and the sticker was obscured. We towed it home last night20 mi andit scared the hell out of me.Overdriveon. Forget it! Overdrive off. I had problem getting it past 60mph. The temp was climbing. And that was only 20 miles down I20. I'm sure wind drag played a BIG role in this.
Be carefull!!! Stay well below your max rating.
Does anyone have a cheap Ram 25-3500 for sale?
