Same deal, multiple occurences. Original code was P0440 now it is a P0456. Just came back again after about a two-three week hiatus. The latest code has not been read or cleared, but I would have a pretty strong instinct that it will come back with the P0456 (EVAP SMALL LEAK) With that said, here is what has been done so far.
1. Fuel Cap Replaced(Replaced with MOPAR Original factory part.)
2. Lines replaced on the EVAP CANISTER end. Both lines replaced, I am figuring one line is a pressure, and one is a return. Either way both lines that attach to the EVAP Canister have been replaced and I even went so far as to use hose clamps on the fittings to get extra security. I am still trying to organize printouts from the readings to see if I can establish a pattern but nothing so far.
3. 2001, Are you sure your code is not a P0456?
Any thoughts, gentlemen? The next step is a smoke test, which is about $40 plus diagnostic fee. I have tried to eliminate the obvious stuff, at least externally and checked fittings and lines. I know Dealer cost for EVAP Canister is about $150 so I am trying to get the simple and cheap stuff fixed first.

As a starting point for the EVAP canister lines, mine were dryrotted at the fittings. I am not ruling out a break in the line at other points but start with the fittings on the canister end. The lines I replaced were about 2- feet of scrap vacuum hose the only thing it cost me was a coupler/adapter for one of them because the fitting on one end was 7/16th and the canister end was 3/8th. The whole hose repair cost me about $5-10 for hose clamps, and the coupler/adapter. It is the Canister that is expensive.

Code read at A.Zonetoday, Just as I suspected P0456. Checked with Service Monger (ADVISER)Dealer, for any obvious stuff. Sounds like I am going to have to put it on the schedule for Diagnostic, which fortunately does include the smoke test/leak check. ($45) He did mentionsomething that may seem fairly logical any input wouold be appreciated. When you fuel leave the power off, and do not apply electrical power to the vehicle again until fueling is complete and fuel cap is on tight.. Tempting as it is to leave in accessory position to watch the fuel tick up. That provides basically a circuit to close, and trip the M.I.L. (Fuel cap off, vapor emissions and a leak in the circuit, so it senses a leak and trips the light. I will check it out for a couple of tanks, and if it does come back then Time for the Dealer visit, (Ouch, those werepretty tough words to admit.)
