Extended warranty??
I have 78k on my 2002 5.9L Durango. I have had no troubles except I need to replace my thermostat (it is stuck open and giving me a code under the MIL about taking to long to get to operating temp). I got a wartranty offer through Cap one for a company called "CarChex" for warranty coverage. 60K milesfor 4 years. The price is $1999 with a $199 down and $99 a month for 18 months wit zero percent finance on it. It has a $100 deductable and I can go to any ASE certified mechanic to get it fixed if anything breaks. He even said when my timing chain needs done a 100K miles they will pay for it whether it is broke or not. Preventative, because if it breaks it could cost them more to fix the problems it would cause. It is bumper to bump and includes all the electrical. I am looking at the "Platinum" coverage as it covers the "optional" stuff too. Not much cheaper to drop the "optional", Like $200 or $300 total on the cost.

It is all up to you on the coverage. I have a lifetime warrany on everything that makes the D go ie engine, tranny, axles. but it doesn't cover parts such as the t-stat, alt, water pump etc... These warranty companies will make you take it to the cheapest place in town even if they know nothing about what they are about to TRY and fix and will only pay up to a certain hourly rate. With my tranny I ended up paying $800 out of pocket after all was said and done because I wanted transmission mechanics to work on it not just Joe Mechanic go at it.
Thats was my thinking on both yuor comments. If you look at the link in from the copy of the email I put in it lists the timing chain. That one caught me off guard but it is in writing. Covered under the wear and tear option. As far as who to take it to, he told me and I believe i even read it in one of the items he emailed me, I can toake it to who ever I want to as long as it is an ASE certified Tech working on it. He told me dealers, Goodyear, Firestone, etc... Payment is covered on the phone unless it is a shop specifically working with them then they can do it on the computer. He said the shop calls with the problem and estimate to fix it. Then, as all warrantiesgo, if approved they fix it and the warranty company pays them. Payment would be worked out on the initial phone call to the claim adjuster. Kind of like insurance after a wreck.
I guess my main question is, if all he said is true then does it look like a decent deal? I plan on questioning everything and asking for the documents on coverage andthe policy on how they pay tobe mailed to me before I buy it. I want a copy they printed out so there can be no questions later. I was told the policy is transferable if I sell the Durango also I can get a refund on the prorated amount on the remaining policy if I choose that route instead. Let me know what you guys think.

What?????? First time I ever heard of this. If a timing chain brakes at or before 100K then it was defective. I doubt that "preventative" is covered in thepolicy, get it in writing, may be something the sales man is using as a pitch. Once you bought it then it is your responsibility to "prove" that is the case with the coverage.

Actually I can get just a drive tran coverage from them for about $1000 that is 6 year and 100K miles from the day I buy it. So that might be an option, sounds about like your coverage.
I have 165,000 and still haven replaced timming chain. As far as a warenty i would put the money in a savings and use it if i had to for $2000 you can do a hole hell of alot of work to the d

I did a google search for extended warranties. There are some that are scams or shotty ones that will nickel dime you. But there are some reputable ones as well They'll still offer you the warranty even if you have a 100k on your D. I cannot remember which one I did a quote on my D wtih 83k on it, but they said they'll still warranty my D for 6 years/100k for $2k. Wished I would have bought this before my tranny gave out that is gonna cost me close to 3k after everything has been replaced.
