Why does my 99 Durango keep dying?? help
I took it to the dealership. It is supposed to be ready tomorrow. They replaced the white connector that plugs in to the computer. (the one that I could wiggle and get a temporary fix) Hopefully this will get me back on the road.

Get this, I went to pick it up and the tech said he would go pull it around for me. I waited and waited and after a while he came back walking! Said he couldn't get the truck to start. So, now they say they are going to have to replace the computer! To other people with this same problem, there are many small things they can replace to try to resolve this problem, but again the dying problem will keep resurfacing. I will let you know how it runs after the new computer. This may be the solution, we'll see.

Looks like you are good to go. I thought I posted a reply with some search results on your problem? Or this may be another similar post here? I was going to recommend you to change the plug or harness where it connects to the PCM. Sometimes it may be a bad harness which can short out the PCM. But I think if they changed the white plug, I assume it was the wiring cables also?
Just found out that your post is a duplicate post that another user "Sunshine" posted. Please look over in her message thread and you may find more details that may help with your problem.

I have had various symptoms on my 99. I would reset my PCM and that works for about a month. The first time D wouldn't stay idle. Second Third and Fourth time D wouldn't start. Also while under steady throttle it would sputter as if fuel starved. I checked on another forum and this is a common problem with the older D's. To reset your PCM disconnect your battery and wait, not sure how long I usually wait about an hour, then reconnect your battery and be ready for the alarm to sound as the first time I tried this I put my head through the hood. Then turn on all of your accessories such as lights, A/C on high, radio, fog lights etc., start your SUV and let idle until it has reached operating temperature, then turn off the SUV and restart. That should reset the PCM. It is not a permanent fix as I have stated, but a PCM is expensive and hard to find. My cheap butt is still shopping around.
Hi Christygr97!
Seems as tho we are having the same issues with our trucks!
Im thinking that changing my computer is the only solution too, but I want to eliminate the cheaper options first. Some are as easy as changing out the computer, some are not.
Just wondering how is your truck running with the new computer?
And more info on your Durango would be awesome too. Im trying to find a common link that we all have that may be the cause of this "no bus" issue. Thanks!

My Durango is a 99, 5.2, 4x4, w/106K miles. I haven't done the PCM replacement yet, I'm looking at reprogramming with the Hypertech as Kensai has suggested. I'm going to get a hold of Hyper and see if this might work. I'll post to keep you updated, but if you check my other post I gave the prices of PCM's. If you have the dealership do it you're looking at $700. Since you are here, you obviously have what it takes to do this repair yourself if it is just the PCM. If our problems goes much deeper I think we are going to need some more info. I'll keep in touch.
I think it fixed it! So far so good. The Durango is running great, no problems with it dying whatsoever. Even have been traveling long distances on hot days! The computer was replaced and also the white connector that plugs into the pcm. Thank you everyone for your help with this problem. I hope this was the trick!!

I have the same problem, my Durango keeps dying on me several times. I“ve been reading a lot about this subject and found out that the problem is caused by a PCM overheating. I contacted the guys from autocomputerexchange.com and immediatly after I asked for a PCM for a Durango they told me the model and part number I needed, they sell an upgraded computer for $289 with 1 year warranty. I am waiting for my new computer. I“ll post the result in a few days.
