Front Brake Chirps - Out of Ideas......
Hello Everyone,
Just a quick background, I have a 1998 Durango 4x4 that was purchased last year. A few months ago I noticed an excessive amount of rattling coming from the front. The sound would go away if I applied the brakes. I was also getting the ABS/Brake light sometimes. I took a look and the front drivers side outer brake pad had the upper "ear" broken. So, I replaced the pads, rotors seemed fine.
After this, I was getting a very loud "chirping" sound and squeal on the drivers side only. The sound would get a little louder when the brakes were first applied, then go away. I realized that I had forgotten to use any anti-squeal compound on the new pads. So I pulled it back apart, and applied it. It lasted for about 30 minutes and the sound was back.
So, last week I bought the best pads and rotors that Murray's had and installed them. These pads came with abutment clips which I installed. I used the compound, and the chirping was less audible than before, but it was still there. It also immediately went away when the brakes were applied. So, I took it for a longer drive, about 90 miles round trip, and noticed a burning smell close to home. I also noticed that it would pull when the brakes were applied. So, I got out, and sure enough, the drivers side wheel was very hot compared to the passengers side.
So, last night, I replaced both calipers, cleaned everything up, bled the brakes etc. and the burning/pulling is gone and the brakes work great. However, the Chirping is still there!!! Its only the drivers side and its only after the wheels warm up, after about 3 miles or so.
Also to note: being a 1998, the "clips" that some refer to here are built right onto the pads, so I know that I am not missing them.
I am completely out of ideas. Has anyone had this issue, or offer any advise?
Thanks!

Well I was thinking spring clips the whole time but I guess you've got that ruled out. The only thing I could think of is maybe giving them a slightly more aggressive bend in order to lock them down better. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
how are the wear on your tires? that chirp sounds more like a metal to metal.. like maybe tie rod ? ball joints? not all of them will shake.. and if you have replaced all of the brakes.. its time to look elsewhere... also.. there is a metal 'protector' behind your rotor.. make sure thats AT LEAST an inch from your rotor.. i would say closer to 2.. that WILL make a chirp.. and sometimes a squeel.. dont be scared of it.. just bend it back
Wow, dust shields, never thought of that! I will give that a try and post back.
I don't think that its tie-rods etc., I just had all that checked out about 3000 miles ago, and the noise stops when the brakes are just barely applied.
I will give the dust shield a try!
Thanks again guys!

Well, I took a quick look at the dust shields and they seemed fine. I bent them out little anyway. I only see one on the top, however, I didn't pop the wheel off. The chirp is still there, and it didn't change at all.
I did a general search and found a forum for Tundras with the same issue. Apparantly, replacing or turning the rotors fixed the issue. It was explained that a chirp can be caused from a very small high spot on the rotor, or a glazed rotor. It may not be enough to have a pulse in the pedal.
What do you guys think? A possibility maybe? I am wondering if my bad caliper heated the rotor up enough to cause the issue? Or maybe I just got a bum rotor........
Maybe I will just swap the front rotors and see what happens..............

might as well.. check the dust shields if they are on the bottom... or just take the rotor off.. take it to the local garage.. most will turn it for 10-15 bucks...
but honestly.. i dont think its a rotor issue.. the other thing to check.. check the wheel hub/bearing... it is a 4x4 .. might try to loosen the nut just about 1/4 turn.. if that dont work.. tighten it about 1/4 turn.. what your describing ... to me.. sounds more like a suspension/steering problem.. rather than a brake problem... also.. take it to a parking lot.. crank the wheel all the way.. and do some donuts.. dont lay down the brake.. but give it some force see if it does it at full turn

Got 2 be th rotors, they are warped U apply the brakes and the noise stops. Take em off and go to garage and have them turned, if not could be caliper pistons sticking but I don't think so.
is your chirp sound a consistent solid noise
check your brake hose could have collapsed or have a internal blockage and is holding pressure not allowing the caliper to fully release
or broken up (kind of like a morse code sound)
brake chatter? check your slide plates(where your brake pad ears rest) look for excessive wear on the slides if so buy the anti rattle clips

Hello Guys,
I was out of town for the weekend, so I haven't done the rotor swap. However, I wanted to clear up that I am pretty sure that its the brakes and not bearings. The noise goes away with just a small application of the brake pedal. I did the parking lot thing before I posted to check the bearings and nothing eliminates the noise except applying the brakes.
Also, the noise is a "chirp" "chirp" "chirp" that increases with speed.
I suppose I will swap the rotors and see if the noise follows it. I did have a bad caliper that wasn't releasing all the way on that side, so it probably did the rotor in. If the noise follows the rotor, I'll have them turned.
If the noise is still there, I guess I will look into replacing the brake lines up front and maybe flushing the fluid.
Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it and will post back once I have time to dive into this more.
