Default HELP please '02 5.9 Stalling at idle & P0601

Hi everyone.

Here is the full story of my problem:
Hi everyone.

My wife Durango (5.9) is starting to gradually die on us, with only about 50K Miles (72000 Km). We live in the Middle East, and the temps here are quite high all year long, but only recently did the car stall when idling after a run.

For instance, my wife goes to pick up the kids from school, and when she slows down (and eventually stops ) to get into the garage, the engine drops rpms & stops. Today, it did this on the road too, and she just had time to pull over to the side.
She told me that she saw the check engine light come up (unverified, it could have been when she tried to start the car again). When I got there, I poured some warmish water on the radiator (seems like a good idea at the time) then on the top of the engine, left the car to rest 5 mn, and it started again. I did not get the "NO BUS" message described all over the web. I could drive it home without problem.
Tonight, I took the car to my mechanic, left it outside to get warm idling for a good 20mn, but could not replicate the fault. Then I drove back home, and guess what, by the car park, when I slowed down (and stopped), the engine dropped rpms & stalled. On purpose tonight I drove the car in a "sporty" way in order to get it quite warm. It seems to have worked.

Although there seems to be a correlation between the outside temp and this happening, nothing on the gauges looks wrong. Engine temp is about in the middle, no light comes up on the dash.

I have not checked the IAC yet (will do tomorrow), the only other thing I can come up with is that I replaced the stock air filter with a K&N one (in the original casing) but I look after it well.

New update: got a brand new IAC from Dodge, replaced the old one, and the problem is still there, albeith a bit less. Reading Chris_G's post in the meantime, I wonder what to do next, do you think that I need to replace the TPS and Crank shaft speed sensor, or should I take the car to the dealer for diagnostics? Parts here are fairly expensive, I paid US$ 100 for the IAC, same price each for the other 2 sensors.

Stalling only occurs when stopping (in D, brake pedal pressed). RPMs are round 600 at idle, suddenly drop to 0. Temp, Oil pressure, fuel gauges are normal. Check engine light does not come on when the car stops. It is not that hot at the moment here.

I reset the PCM last night, because my wife told me that the car still stalled once at a stop on the way home. I spoke to a trustworthy mechanic who told me that it was unlikely to be the crankshaft sensor as this would happen all the time and not only when idling. Can someone please confirm this?

I tried to read the codes with the ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON trick, all I got was a mediocre P_DONE. I showed my wife how to do it, in the vain hope that the car will return some code at some point, but I am not holding my breath.

This is the type of malfunction that I cannot replicate, that does not light up the engine malfunction light, and that does not leave any error code.

UPDATE: Just got a P0601 code
except this stalling issue, the car is running fine so why is it throwing a P0601?

I guess we found out the reason for the problem.
Driving the car today, I found that it was downshifting from time to time (not that often).

Today I took the car to the stealership, and got the following report:

1.Fuel pump pressure is 32 PSI, should be more than 40 PSI = Replace (3 hours)
2.Change wires, rotor & rotor cap (2 hours)
3.Change IAC valve (which funnily I changed less than one week ago) (1 hour)
4.Change PCM (3 hours)
5.Change spark plugs (1.5 hours)
6.Change Transmission range sensor (1 hour)

Can someone knowledgeable please check the times given to carry out the work.
From the info I got from the internet, changing the PCM takes about 20mn.
The stealer tells me that it comes blank and needs to be completely reprogrammed. Lie?
I changed the IAC motor last week, its 2 torx screws, takes 15 mn maximum. He wants 1 hour for this. And he want to change a brand new part too.

And finally, is it likely that a shot PCM would cause this stalling issue. Normally the car idles well, and all of a sudden he dies. When I restart it, its fine (provided that I dont stop in D)

If I ordered a new/refurbished PCM from ecudirect, would it come ready to fit, or is there some programming involved. Because I know that the stealer wont touch it.

P0601 Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error

I have no idea on the answer to this code but I can tell you that if your fuel pressure is too low I can see that causing a problem with stalling. As far as having the stealer do it for you it looks like they already told you how bad they want to rip you off. I would take it to another shop after you have verified that the fuel pressure is too low and also do the plugs, cap, rotor, and wires yourself if you are mildly competent mechanically.

Thank you MeanGreen. Unfortunately where I live (UAE) there is only one Authorised Dodge Dealer - in fact there are several belonging to the same company, so I guess I dont have much choice.
Upon checking in the FSM, less than 30 PSi for more than 5 minutes is what is considered as abnormal. I wouldnt say that 32Psi is much more than that, but technically it is enough to be on the right side.
The PCM does regulate fuel & idle speed so I guess that I will have to grind my teeth and do it to start with.

Have you tried cleaning the Intake? A friend had the same problem and all it took was a $1 can of carb cleaner.

Replaced the PCM, the car is running fine now.[sm=groupwave.gif] to the Durango designers who decided to put the PCM in the hottest part of the engine thus causing it to cook under hot weather.Muppets.

We are currently having the same prob only worse on our 03 durango, v-8, 4.7, it idles at 4-500 all the time, in downshifts rpm jump up and down, and chokes out and stalls upon stopping, tries to choke even when just idling, we replaced tps and iac, problem only got worse, any other suggestions? we've reset the pcm, and nothing has changed. We've only had the truck about a week now, was my wife's bday present, and now it is undriveable. We seriously need to get this fixed asap. Another thing, ours keeps reading p-done as well, and on computer it shows that the tps is not responding right, the iac is responding too slow, and get this, when we have computer plugged in, and driving 60 mph the computer reads that it is only doing 35 mph! Any advice?
Thanks
Gabe
