Fuel Saver??
Saw these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GAS-S...spagenameZWDVWon ebay while hunting for something else. It says you install in fuel line and is supposed to up your gas mileage and hp. Can these really work?? Can something like this damage anything?? At the rate my 02 Durango RT is going, it needs HELP! I only get about 10 mpg, and I dont know how much longer I can be forking $2.79/g into my truck. I do do a lot of in town driving, but even on the highway it only gets about 12. I am lucky to get 200 miles to a full tank. I did add a KN air filter, I really havent noticed much of a difference. It only has 70k miles. As a part, I have thought about, is that its not just 4wd, its AWD, so maybe that is part of the gas guzzling bc it is in 4wd all the time. I read thru the owners manual to find out if I have to drive it in AWD (bc it has the option of awd, 4hi, 4lo, n), and by what it said I basically do have to have it in awd. I love my truck, it is just so......ME! but I dont know about this 10mpg.....................
i think you'd be better off finding out the source of your terrible mileage.....if you don't have a lead foot, then something is wrong with your D.
first off, are you throwing any error codes? search out the root of your mileage. possible sources.of poor mileage are clogged cat, fouled plugs, dirty air filter (or any part of your air intake including throttle body), clogged fuel filter (possible?), a dead O2 sensor will make you run rich.
how long has it had this mileage? did it start suddenly, or gradual?

The best way to save on gas is to keep your foot out of it. To put it bluntly this miracle fuel saver is BS. Hell they won't even tell you what it is or give you a pic. It is probably a modded MAF sensor which can give you some power gain but I don't see it giving any fuel savings. Hell it probably would give you worse mileage. There are a few other items floating around that promise fuel savings such as magnets and spacers but they are all a joke. CAI and a free flowing exhaust would be your best bet and as Deerang has said in another thread try moving your seat back so that it is a real stretch to floor the accelerator. One other thing you could do is get a part time 4wd transfer case and get rid of the AWD. I imagine you would get a 1 mpg gain out of it making it a 2wd.

I figured the "fuel saver" thing was crap, but ask anyway, eh? When we purchased it, the man told us that it got about 12mpg. Yeah, if you are doing 55 down the interstate. I made a trip to Killeen, Tx, its about 315 miles. Filled up, got to Temple which is about 20 min from Killeen when my fuel light came on, checked my trip and bout had a cow, 330 miles!!!!!!!! Thats so unreal for this truck, last time we made the trip, we had to fill up halfway. I even called my husband guess what?? guess what!! Youre never gonna believe this!! Told him my mileage, he bout had a cow too! That was with running 80 with cruise a majority of the way. I could have gotten all way to Killeen if not have getting uhhem! lost in Dallas........I wish I could say the same for the trip back, but with crawling traffic for 2 1/2 hours in Ft Worth, that zapped a good half a tank right there. I have the KN air filter, I keep it dusted out regularly, about once a week when I do my other normal "maintenance". I know that the 5.9 Mag has the distinct sound, but it does almost sound like a bad muffler, it sounds choky, not jsut deep. As far as the 2wd and only gaining 1mpg, I wouldnt even bother. I dont lead foot, I just drive normally. We went from OKC to Corpus towing our 17ft aluminum Basstracker and we had to fill up three times. Never doing that again.....as far as throttle body, I dont know about anything that far into it. I can change my oil, brakes, spark plugs things like that. When we purchased it, it had only 56k miles on it, so Iam sure that he had never done a tune up. I have put 30k on it since and still havent done one, I did take it to the Dodge house inquiring about their tune ups and such, they told me it wasnt ready for one yet. At what mileage is a first tune up done?? The people at the Dodge house really made me mad, but at least they did unprogram the door locking when you get to 15mph, that was really unnerving that it didnt unlock when you put it back in Park. Have written these options down y'all have given me and hopefully something will work. I tell my husband that even if I win lottery, I would still drive it, just paint it gunmetal blue, add chrome grill guards and HAVE SOMETHING DONE BOUT THAT MILEAGE!!! lol
You are supposed to do a tune up every 60k miles and keep an eye on the plugs regularly. Also try doing 75 instead of 80, that 5 mph difference is good for about a 1 mpg difference. If you do 60 you'll really be saving gas but I do understand that is tough to do.

Notice that I don't claim this slowing down is 'cheap' because of the

In the Cummins White Paper they cite a study where there was a 30% variation
in MPG between professional drivers in the exact same truck over the same
route.
This is similar to GM research, such as this from from page A3 of The
Wall St Journal on 11-21-2005:
"Roger Clark, GM's senior manager of energy and drive quality in North
America, said the current test does a good job measuring average mileage but
the problem is the variation in how people drive. He cited a GM Study of 209
people driving the same midsize SUV. The fuel economy varied from about 13
miles per gallon to 23 miles per gallon, depending on the driver."
Ford did a test of different drivers in the same vehicles and found an even
greater MPG difference of 38% between the best and worst driver habits and
conditions like low pressure tires, max AC, cargo on roof racks, etc:

My 00 R/T gets 12/14. That's being easy on the pedal. But living in DFW area, it's not flat so my MPG always vary. But I was so tickled that I actually got to see 17 finally for the first time driving back from Midland/Odessa to DFW. I was able to barely make it home on a full tank at 355 miles. After topping off the tank at 23.9 gallons, I only had about a gallon of fuel left.
I guess the elevation in West texas is higher as I only get about 14 driving to west texas and got 17 on the way back from west texas.
I like to see if I get a better improvement on my MPG on the highway since I installed my custom made front ram air tube. driving on highway, I can really tell there is a power increase after installing the tube.
But what can help you both in terms of MPG and power and save you a few bucks at the fuel station, get a hypertech programmer that can give you dual octane fuel settings. My D was required to use premium fuel so it was eating away at my wallet, now after programming the D with the hypertech, I now use regular fuel without loss of power, still a little gain in power vs OEM settings.
