Default HEATER HELP

I have a 98 Durango that intermittently will start blowing cold air out the passenger side floor no matter what osition the controls are set on. It used to only happen once in a while but is starting to happen more often. The evaporator core and heater core were replaced just before I bought it and was fine for a while. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you even get heat at all from any of the other settings? If so, I would check your blend door. If you get no heater on any setting, check your heater hoses located under the hood. You should see two hoses side by side going into the firewall. Feel the hoses. if one is hot and one is cold, this means your heater core is clogged. If both hoses are hot, then it may be your blend door being stuck.

If you have a clogged core and you already replaced it recently, this is a sign that your cooling system itself needs a serious inspection. Check your radiator as well to make sure that is not about to be clogged up. You may need to do multiple flushing to really clean up your cooling system if need be.

Good call Kensia. Sounds like a blend door to me.

I think there's a TSB on 2nd Dakota/1st gen Durango for pass side poor heater performance. It has something to do with the floor duct/vent positioning and there is an updated part. I'll try to dig up that bulletin.

Steeltown, you can get to the blend door cable connection on the HVAC box by pulling out the glove box. Once you remove it, you should be able to see the cable to the left. Check the cable to see if it is kinked.Worst case, you should be able to rotate the blend door by hand and maybe free it up.

My blend door opens and closes with the shifting of the tranny! What could cause that?

A blend door that is not attached to anything (broken cable) or more likely a vacuum leak.
