I am thinking of trying my hand at changing my 2000 durango's oil and filter next week while I have some time off before the holidays. And I'm thinking, how hard can it be? I don't know, but I'm sure some of you have done this, and can give me some tips, help, etc.

First things first, I am not naturally mechanically inclined. I have tools, but most (if not all) are english not metric.
I don't have a problem getting my hands dirty, and I have plenty of time.

Here are some questions that I have:

It.s very easy to change the oil takes about 10 to 15 minutes to do.I use castro gtx 5w30 oil.go to a auto parts for filter or walmart has them for less $.Good Luck.toy don't need mm.

 

very simple to do, like bill said 10-15 mins. first time maybe a little more. dont need metric. 5/8" wrench or socket will do. warming the oil up helps. you'll also need an oil filter wrench to get the filter off. for the filter i went to walmart and got some high priced fram one and just shoved it in the cheapy box lol. good luck

 

just remember that once you warmed up the oil, that the filter is going to be really warm. Just don't burn yourself, and you're good to go

 

If you have the 4.7 5w-30 is recommended 5.9 10w30 unless it's gonna get real cold soon where u are then you could go with the 5w.

 

Yes,a good pair of mechanic's gloves are great for that reason.

Look into getting a fumoto valve to replace your drain plug. You will love changing your oil the next time.

 

Oil filter can be fun to manuever out on 5.2 & 5.9 versions, but not a big deal, just take your time. I prefer 10w 30 Valvoline and alway use Fram oil filters...but really your brand preference.

 

i just get mine from the wheelwell, but then again im lifted. from what i remember top of the motor isnt too hard to get at it

 

If you are going to do it yourself... Look at the synthetic oils. I run Royal Purple. You should look into it.

 

+1 on the Royal Purple. Gave me a smoother idle when I switched over. Make sure you get the synthetic oil filter too, cause they are rated for longer (potential) oil change intervals.
