Sounds like you might have a timing issue. Did you take care to get the #1 piston back to top dead center when you reinstalled the distributor??
You should be able to put a timing light on it (boy thats old school eh??) and look at the timing whilst cranking the motor. You might try rotating the distributor first to one side and then the other, then trying to start it.One you get it going, you should keep the rpms around 1200-1500 for a least 20 minutes to let things seat in and get used to each other.
Check all your wiring/connectors to make sure thinks are all good to go.

Pull the #1 plug and hold your finger over the hole while someone bumps the engine over a little at a time. When you feel compression, look for hte mark on the crank to line up. Once you're on #1 TDC compression stroke, then look to make sure the rotor is pointing toward the front of the truck.
Your symptoms are classic 180* out.
