ft diff blowing oil out the vent tube
I am having a problem with my 99 Durango 5.9. I have owned it since new and done all of the required maint and it currently has 100k trouble free miles on it. Tha 4wd has been used about 2 times a year when going over the pass usually for 10 miles or so per time. Last night when going over I engaged full time 4wd for about 10 miles over ice and snow covered roads and started to notice a diff oil smell. When I arrived at my parents I smelled it as soon as I got out but it was late and I decided to leave it tell morning. When I checked I found a fair amount of oil had come out of the vent tube to the ft diff. What could cause this? I have not had it serviced since the 50k so no new oil has been added. I have used the 4wd several times since then and this has never happend......Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated......Thanks

RE: ft diff blowing oil out the vent tube
unless its an excessive amount i wouldn't worry too much about it. just check the oil level occasionally. a couple weeks ago i used my 4wd for several hours riding around real slow in very dry and dusty conditions. afterwards i had some oily residue all over the vent hose, fender, and frame. it wasn't very much oil, but a little bit makes a pretty good mess in the dust, probably more in the snow.
