Default HELP!! ASAP Engine failure

okay heres the story. i have an 01 durango that has 170k on it. tookit in for oil change they finished printed up receipt and said we were good. well from then on when i was driving and accelerating, towards the end of the gear almost shifting it sounded like a clicking would come like maybe fan hitting something. checked n wasnt that but it wasnt bad so we kept driving well recently it got louder and worse. it was nownot just before the shift, but now the entire time clicking. and when i let off the gas it would shake and sound like something was un bolted and moving. so i took it in and they checked it over and said that the bottom of the engine failed.

now they said there is 4 quarts of oil missing. it's not been leaking. i have no oil spots at school at home at work or anything. my guess is that one of their new technicians who did it didnt put enough oil in when they did it and left me 4 quarts low causing my engine to prematurely fail. oh and they priced me at 12k for new engine.

what i wanna know is: how many quarts are you to put in the durango when you do an oil change. and they said that every 900 miles it goes down about a quart but i dont think that sounds right...

please somebody help. i'm friends with the guy we usually work with but this time they sent us over to the other oil change place they own and he saidif they messed up then they would definately be giving us a DAMN good deal on a new vehicle.

I have the 4.7 and she holds a healthy 6 quarts. Didn't the check gauges light come on? Hopefully they'll figure something out for you. Good luck

if it happened within minutes of driving after the oil change, yeah they forgot to add oil after draining it, or the oil filter gasket failed, but that would make a huge mess, and i don't think you said there was any.

it happened once at the jiffy lube i worked at, guy didn't add any oil after the oil change, brand new chevy 2500 work van made it about 2 miles before the engine locked up.that was about a $7,000 bill for the store.

edit: 5.2 and 5.9 durango's take 5 qts. of oil total, 4.7's take 6 total.

get ready to sue if they're not covering the damage, not kidding at all.

Sounds like BS.

Who doesn't know 4-6 quarts of oil for nearly every motor on the road in a car/suv. Also, $12K for a motor?! Okay.. is that with a gold intake? 4 vehicles in a well laid out sig yet it's the first post for the user? If you took it right back after it acted up, of course there would be no oil "at home, work or school" It was never there after the service, thus no relevance unlessyou had SuperMan Oil that flew there on it's own.

I don't doubt the shop screwed up, however something doesn't ring quite right with that post. Perhaps an uber-uber-newbie I guess.

Buy a used Engine from ASAP motors. I've bought transmissions from them and had good luck. They even come with a 90 warranty and you can buy up to a one year warranty on them. Their prices are low.

As for the other, go see an attorney. We had a case here in Alabama where a quick oil change place didn't put a filter on tight, the car caught on fire after it had been turned off, and since it was in the garage, it burnt down the entire home. If it was a new tech, they'll probably settle out of court instead and atleast give you enough to cover the cost of the used engine.

Sorry that had burnted up there. What the heck was I thinking last night?

The shop screwed up. You may have to geta lawyer. Bad news is they only have to give you an equivilant engine.... another 170K 4.7. Happened to a guy at work at jiffy lube. They put a brand new v6 with 120K in his blazer and his lawyer said he couldn't do anything about it.

Good Luck

The lawyers may say you can't do much about it, but if you have a good investigative reporter in your area than you can get a lot done, for $12k you can get a pretty good used D or for that matter any SUV with lower mileage and a better engine, I would not take
equivalent engine crap, if they are willing to spend 12k on a used engine and give you equivalent mileage, then they are pretty stupid and not very financially sound. If u are unsuccessful with a new vehicle I would try the local media. Bad business and reputation can do a lot more to them financially if they dont want to admit responsibilty.

If you have a very healthy engine, it should use very little or no oil at all. Using one quart of oil per 900 miles is BS! Your D would be putting out smoke clouds that would attract the law and possibly fine you for polluting. I am sure like all other users that replied, that they may have forgotten to put new oil back in your D.

But one thing puzzles me, one user posted that you would surely have gotten the oil light indicator and you also have a oil pressure indicator that SHOULD HAVE immediately told you something is not right. Especially if 4 quarts of oil were missing.

12k for a replacement motor is bogus unless you are planning on getting a custom made racing motor.

Olen G: Just FYI, the 5.9's uses roughly about 5.5 to almost 6 quarts if you effectively drain your old oil. I change the oil out myself and the 5 quart syntec bottle was not enough and had to buy a 6th bottle.

this is why shops have insurance for negligent work. depending on how long you had waited to contact the shop will depend on how much they are willing to pay. you had already contacted the shop, next step is for the shop to write a damage claim,(get copies!!)then you will be in contact with the insurance company unless the shop owner is going to pay for it.(depends on the shop

if you add 5 quarts and wait about a minute, it'll be right on the top of the full mark on the dipstick. also if you check it after the vehicle has been parked a while, it'll be perfectly full at 5 qts. when i drain the oil i pull the plug and leave it out a good hour while i meticulously check the other fluids, grease fittings, u-joints, etc... can't tell me the oil isn't drained in that amount of time. but it really doesn't hurt to overfill them a little like you're doing, mine burns 2 qts. between oil changes because of the blown plenum gasket, soi might as well put in 6 qts for peace of mind.

and there's no reason it would be different from the 5.2L oil capacity, everything is identical.
