Not replacing clip sounds odd to me as well, but it's your ride and it sounds like you read quite a bit on the topic. I'm surprised the fragments did not mess up your limited slip unit too. If I were you, I'd change the fluid again after 500 or so miles just to be sure it's running clean in there after all your work. Good luck

John:

Congrats on a successful repair.

So far, nodifferential issuesyet at almost 67k, butI have pumped the lube out on both servicings. And anyway, my rear end is open ([sm=insomnia.gif]) so there are not any clutch packs to have issues.

It is good that you got in there and made the fix before things got real pricey.

Don

Project finished! Rear end is as quiet as can be. Had to replace the rear wheel abs sensor to fix the abs light, cleaning the metal debris off the old one did not fix it. I used 5 gallons of diesel fuel to flush and clean the diff housing, axle tubes and differential. It when back together extremely clean. It was quite a bear to get the new crush seal to crush though. Set the pinion to 20 in pounds of torque and the adjusters to 75 ft pounds of torque with .0065 of backlash. Inspected the differential and found the other clip on the same side was broken half way so I removed it also. The only thing I can see the clips doing is protecting the diff housing from wearing because they are hardend. They just sit in there loose and flop around. If the diff housing wears early I'll just switch to a different and better setup. Rather do that than worry about clips breaking again.
I do have a new and unique problem that I will start a new thread about.
Thanks
John

Thats a tad tight for re-using ring and pinion, but sounds like you did a good job. Congrats. I usually go .008-.010, since the gears have already worn their pattern.
