I have another question/issue with this topic.
I currently have the same problem on my 2000 Durango where the linkage piece completely went missing so I am unable to get into 4 wheel drive. I crawled under to investigate, and just to try it out, I tried to put my truck into 4 wheel drive manually by moving the position of the lever of the transfer case into 4 Hi but it will not switch out of 2 wheel drive (I was in Neutral). I hate to buy the linkage if my 4 wheel drive is completely shot anyway. Any thoughts? Would doing this in the 4 Low position make a difference (@ hydrashocker)? Thanks for any help.
