Default 01 durango 4x4 problems. Fixed!!

01 dodge durango 4.7L 4x4. 4x4 switch is on the dash (IE not manually activated). The indicator lights stopped working (the little leds that indicate2h, 4h 4l). I checked all fuses and relays. IfI put it into 4 wheel, It doesnt engage. I felt the actuator on the X-fer and doesnt feel like it is moving when the switch is moved. I have searched around and seen a few problems like this, however no final updates. I have seen people say the actuator might be bad, but it doesnt explain the indicator lights not working. Im leaning twards a bad switch. Anyone have any input?

I have a 2000, but it doesn't have a switch, it has the old lever on the ground. My old Chevy Blazer had the electronic type, similar to yours, and when the motor went(x-fer case), so did the lights on the switch. I knew that it wasn't shifting into 4wd because the lights would not change. Try pulling the switch out, which means taking the dash apart (not that hard) and see if it has any visible signs of shorting. Other than that, take a peek underneath to see if the harness has come detached or is loose from the x-fer case.

Best of luck.

Hammers fix things the best when you really drive it hard.

Now it sounds like the actuator.

CTFF

Someone else recently had the same issue, and the fix was replacing the TCCM (transfer case control module)

I believe it was located under the dash near the hood release lever. You might try a battery disconnect reset and see if this helps. If not, start looking for a TCCM. IIRC, the other guy got one used at a bone yard for ~$40. I think he said they were big bucks new.

Checked all fuses, all good. I thinkthe mod isabout 300 new from the dealer. I guess I will try and find one from a bone yard tommorow. Any more details on where it is located? and how to get it out?Is only an 01 mod good for it, orwill a01-03 work? I have a factory extended warrany through dodge, I wonder if it covers it? Any input would be great.

I used the 4 wheel drive frequently. I always try and use it a few times a month even in the summer, just to keep things moving.

CTFF:

What kind of warranty do you have?? You may have already paid for this repair via the warranty. I would not do anything on your own until you determine if the dealerwillfix it for you FREE!!!!!

WellI fixed the problem today. It was the transfer case control module. It cost me $50 at a local junk yard. It took about an hour and a half to take it out and put the new one back in. It took longer than necessary because I took more of the dash apart than was necessary. Doing it again it would take about 30-40 mins. I have a diagram of where the module is located if anyone is intrested, email me.
Thank you all for you help!

N8ech- I have an aftermarket dodge powertrainwarranty. It would cover the module, however I have a $200 deductable. Rather than screw around with a dealer and be without my D for a day, I spent $53 tax included and had it done within 2 hrs. (including drive time to the bone yard). Saved a few bucks and didnt need to borrow a car to get to work.
